Position Title: ELDERS SUPPORT WORKER

Reports to: Manager, Elders Services

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Elders Services, the Elders Support Worker is responsible for providing day-to-day support to elders participating in programs, activities, meals, and special events offered through the elders centre. This includes assisting with the planning, preparation, delivery, and cleanup of meals and programming while promoting a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and culturally respectful environment for Elders.

The Elders Support Worker supports elders through companionship, culture respect, mobility assistance, transportation support, meal services, and program participation to encourage meaningful engagement and connection within community.

Duties & Responsibilities

Elder Support:

  • Provide respectful companionship and engage elders in conversation and recreational activities, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being.
  • Encourage and support elders in participating in Elders Centre activities, including cultural events, wellness activities, educational workshops, arts and crafts, and social gatherings.
  • Assist elders with non-personal mobility support within the centre, including guidance with walkers, wheelchairs and seating assistance.

Food Service & Meals:

  • Assist with meal preparation and food services when needed under the direction of the Elders Services Cook.
  • Support weekly elder's luncheons and other meal programs.
  • Assist with room setup, meal service, welcoming participants, engagement activities and cleanup.
  • Support food service for daily programming, community events, feasts, celebrations and special gatherings.
  • Assist with preparation, packaging, coordination and distribution activities related to Meals on Wheels Program.
  • Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the Manager, Elders Services, or designate and record such incidents in the confidential logbook and as a reportable incident, as required.

Transportation Support:

  • Provide direct transportation for elders attending elders service programs, meals and events.
  • Support safe entry and exit from vehicles, including assistance with mobility devices.
  • Conduct basic vehicle safety inspections and communicate transportation concerns, needs and observations to the elders services team.

Program Operations:

  • Assist with program set up, facilitation support and cleanup.
  • Work collaboratively with elders' services staff, volunteers, contractors and community partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all information related to the elders, families, and personnel and fulfill obligations to respect protection of privacy.
  • Follow all safety protocols and emergency procedures to ensure the well-being of elders and staff.
  • Support occasional evening and weekend programming through adjusted work schedules.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment within the Elders Centre.
  • Other duties as requested by the Manager, Elders Services.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Health Care Aid, Community Support Worker, or related training.
  • Demonstrated interest in supporting elders, seniors in a community-based setting is preferred.
  • Current Level 1 First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification.
  • Food Safe Certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Knowledge of Haisla culture, community programs or elder focused services.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety protocols.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and patient with a strong commitment to supporting the well-being of the elders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Passion for ongoing professional development and growth.
  • Valid BC driver's license (own vehicle is an asset).
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range: $22.95/hr - $27.00/hr
