ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORS

About the Role: You will act as a guardian of land, water, and cultural heritage sites, ensuring construction practices on the NEPL and NSL projects are adhering to and respecting the established environmental assessment protection plan.

Background: Serpent River First Nation is hiring Environmental Monitors to work as part of a team of guardians protecting lands, waters and cultural heritage sites that are located along the NEPL and NSL projects, from Hanmer Transmission Station in Hanmer, Ontario to 3rd Line Transmission Station in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Construction is expected to start in January 2027 on NEPL and in Fall 2027 on NSL. There is a need to have trained Environmental Monitors working ahead of the construction front, during construction, and after construction in order to protect the natural environment, sacred sites and Indigenous land and resources.

Job Description:

You will work with a team of monitors to support environmental protection efforts and Indigenous values protection using both scientific
practices and Indigenous knowledge.
Working in pairs, you will be in the field along the transmission line corridor within
active construction areas to assist in
ensuring the project is carried out respectfully and in keeping with commitments to our First Nation communities. Daily work scheduling coordination of the Environmental Monitors will be provided by the WOCC Monitoring Team in collaboration with each First Nation. Training
and support will be provided by the
WOCC Monitoring
Team and its technical advisors.

Key Responsibilities:

• Understanding & awareness of construction activities

• Understanding & awareness of environmental compliance and traditional land use protection requirements

• Strict adherence to health and safety requirements

• Completion of
  checklists

• Community engagement activities

• Field observation and note-taking

• Data collection & documentation, in both written and digital formats

• Regular reporting to First Nation and WOCC Project Team

• Compliance issues tracking & follow up

• Ongoing training as required

Training will be provided for all responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong interest in environmental and cultural heritage protection

• Ability to work within a team

• Comfortable working outdoors for prolonged periods of time

• Confident outdoor skills

• Good communication skills

• Experience using computers or tablets

• Ability to read and understand project communications

• Ability to work extended hours from time to time and on both weekdays and weekends

• Valid Class “G” drivers license is a requirement.

Job Location:

• Environmental Monitoring will be on construction activities near Serpent River First Nation. In most instances you will be able to commute from home to various work locations along the construction corridor but
  may need to stay in a hotel or the construction camp from time to time.
