The Heavy Equipment Technician - Leadhand is responsible for independently performing basic to complex diagnostics, service maintenance and repair work on customer and/or dealer owned equipment efficiently. They are also responsible for providing leadership support to the shop by assisting in coordinating work assignments, mentoring staff, and ensuring customer satisfaction.

What You Will Be Responsible ForFinancial Performance
- Operate within established budgets and approvals to support branch financial goals.
- Maintain high productivity, efficiency, and gross margin levels to positively contribute to overall branch performance.
- Achieve and uphold a 98% quality of work metric by completing repairs correctly the first time, reducing rework and enhancing customer satisfaction.
Diagnostic and Repair Services
- Perform diagnostics on power equipment to accurately identify repair needs and minimize downtime.
- Diagnose, disassemble, assemble, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems to restore equipment functionality.
- Conduct customer, manufacturer, and regulatory inspections to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks including fluid and filter changes, battery testing, brake adjustments, and lubrication to extend equipment life.
- Execute advanced mechanical repairs such as engine and transmission diagnosis, repair, or replacement to resolve complex issues.
Work Systems and Procedures
- Maintain up-to-date product knowledge relevant to equipment and industry standards.
- Keep work area clean, neat, and safe to ensure efficiency and compliance with OH&S standards.
- Follow proper procedures for hazardous waste disposal and other safety protocols.
- Adhere to service guidelines set by management to ensure consistent, quality service delivery.
- Participate in ongoing training programs including industry-specific technology updates.
- Maintain and care for departmental tools, equipment, and vehicles.
- Mentor and oversee apprentices to support their skill development and professional growth.
Leadership and Support
- Assist in assigning jobs and work areas to shop staff based on skills and workload to maximize team productivity.
- Support repair order appraisal and review to ensure accuracy and appropriate job allocation.
- Direct and assist technicians and apprentices in diagnosing and resolving equipment issues to improve repair effectiveness.
- Approve equipment release for delivery when authorized to.
- Report customer complaints to the Shop Foreman or Service Manager for prompt resolution.
- Coordinate and assist in conducting quarterly safety meetings to promote workplace safety.
- Act as Shop Foreman in their absence to maintain leadership and operational continuity.
- Provide performance feedback for technicians and staff to the Service Manager, aiding in employee development.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Trade qualification (Heavy Equipment, Agriculture, Truck/Transport).
- 5+ years' experience as a Heavy Equipment Technician.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Possess computer and technical aptitude and knowledge for diagnostics and calibration work.
- Possess strong time management skills to perform under pressure.
- Possess strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Possess a commitment to high quality customer service.
- Ability to work multiple shift patterns.
- Ability to lead a team.
- Class 1 driver's license considered an asset.
- Forklift license considered an asset.
