The R&D Engineering – Industrial Pumps is responsible for the research, design, development, testing, and commercialization of new and improved industrial pump products and technologies. This role will focus on advancing pump performance, reliability, efficiency, manufacturability, and lifecycle cost through engineering analysis, simulation, prototype development, testing, and continuous product improvement.

Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, and other cross-functional teams, the R&D Engineer will take product development initiatives from initial concept through design, validation, production readiness, and commercialization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the research, design, development, testing, and commercialization of new industrial pump products and enhancements to existing product lines.
  • Develop and evaluate new pump concepts and technologies through engineering analysis, simulation, prototyping, and physical testing.
  • Lead hydraulic and mechanical design activities for pump components and assemblies, including impellers, casings, shafts, bearing housings, seals, and pressure-retaining components.
  • Apply engineering tools, including CFD and FEA, to optimize hydraulic performance, structural integrity, reliability, efficiency, and product life.
  • Develop and execute prototype and product validation plans, including pump performance testing, analysis of results, and design improvements.
  • Manage R&D and new product development projects from concept through design, validation, production readiness, and commercialization.
  • Research emerging technologies, materials, manufacturing processes, and competitive products to identify opportunities for innovation and product improvement.
  • Lead technical investigations and root cause analysis of pump performance issues and failures, translating findings into corrective actions and design improvements.
  • Develop and maintain engineering design standards, calculation methods, technical specifications, and best practices for pump components and assemblies.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to support efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales to ensure designs meet technical, manufacturing, commercial, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure product development activities comply with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare appropriate engineering documentation and provide technical leadership, knowledge sharing, and mentorship to other technical team members.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration is considered an asset.
  • A Master's degree or advanced education in mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics, turbomachinery, or a related engineering discipline is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive engineering experience with 5+ in centrifugal pump design and development, including hydraulic and mechanical design of pump components.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and development of pump components such as casings, impellers, shafts, bearing housings, seals, and related components.
  • Proven experience participating in or leading product development projects from concept through design, prototype development, testing, validation, and commercialization.
  • Experience with industrial pump testing and performance evaluation.
  • Experience investigating product performance issues and conducting engineering root cause analysis.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving engineered-to-order or technically complex industrial equipment.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of centrifugal pump design, hydraulic principles, pump performance, and rotating equipment.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software
  • Working knowledge of CFD and FEA including the ability to interpret simulation results and apply findings to product design and optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T and experience applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Identify potentially patentable or proprietary product developments and ensure R&D activities appropriately protect the Company's intellectual property and confidential technical information.
  • Knowledge of pump testing, performance evaluation, vibration analysis, and rotating equipment diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of materials selection, metallurgy, casting, machining, and welding processes used in industrial pump manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with applicable pump and rotating equipment industry standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and drive product development initiatives from concept through completion.
  • Innovative and technically curious, with the ability to challenge existing designs and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, risk assessment, and engineering problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong communication, technical writing, and presentation skills.
  • Collaborative and able to work effectively across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, and other functions.
