POSITION OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for a full-time, permanent Intermediate Environmental Scientist to join our field team. This role will support oil and gas environmental assessment, remediation, reclamation, and groundwater monitoring programs throughout northeast British Columbia and Alberta. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time in the field, completing safe, efficient, and high-quality environmental work in remote and outdoor settings.

The successful candidate will be responsible for independently completing and supporting field programs, including site assessments, drilling and sampling programs, remediation activities, groundwater monitoring, contractor coordination, vegetation assessments and accurate field documentation. This position is well suited to a dependable and adaptable environmental professional who is comfortable travelling for extended periods, working in changing weather and site conditions, and taking ownership of field execution.

As part of the Vertex team, you will play an important role in delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality field programs while representing Vertex professionally with clients, contractors, landowners, and other project stakeholders.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATION

  • Diploma, degree, or higher education in environmental science, environmental technology, biology, geology, or a related discipline.
  • Currently possesses, or is eligible to obtain, a professional or in-training designation applicable to environmental work in British Columbia and/or Alberta.
  • 2 to 7 years of environmental consulting or related field experience, with demonstrated hands-on experience in:
    • Stage/Phase 1 and Stage/Phase 2 environmental site assessment field programs, including site inspections, soil logging, soil and groundwater sampling, and field screening
    • Remediation projects, including excavation direction, confirmatory sampling, and contractor coordination; and
    • Groundwater monitoring, including well development, purging and sampling, hydraulic conductivity testing, and surveying
    • Reclamation earthworks supervision on forested and agricultural land uses
    • Vegetation monitoring and assessments (Reclamation Inspections, Schedule B Site Reclamation Assessments, Detailed Site Assessments)
  • Experience completing field programs at remote oil and gas sites in northern Alberta and/or northeast British Columbia would be considered a strong asset.
  • Experience coordinating drilling, excavation, hydrovac, surveying, laboratory, or other field contractors would be considered an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to complete extended field rotations and travel throughout northern British Columbia and Alberta, including work in remote locations.
  • Strong verbal communication and field documentation skills, including the ability to prepare complete, accurate, and timely field notes, daily summaries, photographs, sample records, and safety documentation.
  • Strong time management, organizational, situational awareness, and field problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of contaminated sites and reclamation requirements and field practices in Alberta and/or British Columbia is preferred.
  • A valid driver's licence and a clean driving record are required; experience driving pickup trucks on remote, gravel, winter, and resource roads is considered an asset.
  • Current safety certifications applicable to oil and gas field work are considered an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete technical field activities for environmental assessment, remediation, reclamation, and groundwater monitoring projects, with field work representing the primary focus of the role.
  • Mobilize to remote project locations and complete extended field rotations throughout northern British Columbia and Alberta, as project schedules require.
  • Execute field programs in accordance with approved work plans, permits, regulatory requirements, client expectations, and Vertex procedures.
  • Demonstrate active stewardship of Vertex and client safety programs by completing required hazard assessments, inspections, check-ins, and documentation; exercising stop-work authority when conditions are unsafe; and maintaining compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with project managers, clients, contractors, landowners, laboratories, and other field personnel throughout program execution.
  • Collect representative environmental samples, maintain sample integrity and chain of custody, document field observations, manage field equipment, and submit complete daily field records. Provide field guidance and practical mentorship to junior staff when assigned.
