Join Our Team as Robotics & Mechanical Design Technologist
Robotools Canada is seeking a hands-on Robotics & Mechanical Design Technologist to provide mechanical design and robotics support across our automation projects. This role centers on SolidWorks-based mechanical design, robot cell layout, and hands-on robotics expertise, working closely with our engineering and fabrication teams to design, model, and support the systems we build in-house.
This is an opportunity to work on a wide variety of advanced automation projects, including industrial welding robots, custom robotic material handling cells, autonomous mobile robot (AMR) systems, industrial automation equipment, and prototype R&D platforms. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, the fabrication team, and suppliers to design and support real-world robotic systems.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead SolidWorks mechanical design and 3D modeling for robotic work cells, fixtures, tooling, and custom automation equipment
- Produce assembly drawings, layouts, and BOMs to support fabrication and integration work
- Support the design and testing of R&D test equipment and prototype platforms
- Provide mechanical design support across active robotics and automation projects
- Apply robotics knowledge (arm kinematics, cell layout, teach pendant programming) to support commissioning and integration
- Collaborate with the controls/electrical team on cell layouts, safety systems, and cabling design
- Accurately position and assemble robot cell components from drawings and layouts
- Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, and structural issues on existing systems
- Support custom fabrication and prototype assembly activities
- Maintain design documentation and drawing standards
- Occasional on-site support for commissioning or troubleshooting, as needed
Desired Skills & Experience
- Hands-on SolidWorks experience is required 3D modeling, assemblies, technical drawings, and GD&T
- Mechanical, mechatronics, or robotics engineering/technology background
- Solid understanding of robotic arm kinematics and robot cell design
- Experience with industrial robots or cobots (e.g., Kawasaki, Fairino, or similar) is an asset
- Ability to read and produce wiring diagrams, schematics, and mechanical drawings
- Experience designing fixtures, tooling, or custom automation equipment
- Comfortable using industrial robot teach pendants is an asset
- Experience with pneumatics and industrial I/O systems is an asset
- Welding, fabrication, or machining experience is an asset
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to adapt and learn new robotic systems and technologies quickly
Requirements
- Valid driver's license (for occasional site visits)
- Ability to lift equipment and work in industrial environments
- Ability to work safely around industrial equipment and follow safety procedures
