Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Civil Safety Advisor to support our civil construction projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a strong safety culture across active construction sites while ensuring compliance with applicable Canadian and provincial occupational health and safety legislation.

Experience in civil construction, infrastructure, earthworks, excavation, road construction, utilities, or commercial construction is preferred.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee and implement health and safety policies and procedures on civil construction sites.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, hazard assessments, and safety audits to identify and control potential hazards.
  • Monitor construction activities including excavation, trenching, grading, earthworks, underground utilities, concrete work, lifting operations, traffic control, and equipment operations.
  • Provide safety orientations, training, toolbox talks, and daily safety meetings to employees and contractors.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions, preparing detailed reports and recommendations for corrective action.
  • Ensure compliance with Canadian occupational health and safety legislation, including applicable provincial OHS regulations and Alberta OHS requirements.
  • Work closely with project managers, site supervisors, forepersons, and contractors to identify hazards and implement effective controls.
  • Conduct and review Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), FLHAs, Safe Work Plans, and other project-specific safety documentation.
  • Monitor the use of personal protective equipment and ensure workers follow established safe work procedures.
  • Assist with emergency response planning, drills, and emergency preparedness.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection records, training records, incident reports, and corrective-action tracking.
  • Follow up on deficiencies and ensure corrective actions are implemented and documented.
  • Promote a proactive safety-first culture across all project activities.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for safety-related matters on assigned civil construction sites.

Qualifications

  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) or equivalent certification required.
  • CRSP designation required.
  • Previous civil construction or industrial construction safety experience required.
  • Experience with excavation, trenching, earthworks, utilities, road construction, infrastructure, or heavy civil projects is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian health and safety legislation and provincial OHS requirements, including Alberta OHS.
  • Strong understanding of construction hazards, hazard assessments, and risk-control practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable CSA standards and industry best practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with project management, supervisors, workers, and subcontractors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate safety documentation.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments, identify deficiencies, and enforce corrective actions.
  • Proficiency with safety reporting, documentation, and computer-based systems.

  • Standard First Aid / CPR
  • Additional construction safety certifications considered an asset

Required tickets and certifications must be submitted with certificates/proof of certification.

Additional Requirements

Successful candidates must pass an Alcohol & Drug (A&D) test as a condition of employment.

The successful candidate must be willing to work in an active construction environment and comply with all company, client, and project-specific safety requirements.
