Reporting to the Technical Director, this role is ideal for a creative and analytical chemist who can combine strong scientific knowledge with a practical understanding of manufacturing. You will take projects from bench development through pilot trials and plant-scale commercial production while contributing to analytical methods, regulatory requirements and continuous improvement.

Compensation: $75,000–$85,000 annually + bonus + RRSP match + health benefits
Your day-to-day will include:Formulation & Product Development
- Develop and validate new or modified formulations, including EPA- and FDA-registered products, by defining project objectives, methodology and desired outcomes.
- Apply chemistry knowledge and the scientific method to achieve project goals through a systematic, knowledge-based approach.
- Assess raw material options and research new ingredients or technologies as required.
- Evaluate interactions between formulation components that may affect product functionality, safety, stability, shelf life, processing requirements and capital investment.
- Conduct literature searches and patent reviews to support product development activities.
- Support the scale-up of formulations from bench development through pilot plant trials and commercial production.
- Ensure formulations can be manufactured efficiently while considering cost, product quality, safety, health and environmental requirements.
- Collaborate with laboratory, technical and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot issues and achieve successful project outcomes.
- Develop new laboratory analytical capabilities to assess formulations and support competitive product analysis.
- Create product appraisal methods that evaluate ingredient functionality, enable faster screening and provide reliable product-performance metrics.
- Conduct analytical testing, including HPLC and UV spectroscopy, and evaluate existing methods and limitations.
- Define quality specifications for new products using appropriate statistical approaches.
- Maintain accurate, organized and confidential records of batches, chemical and product samples, technical and safety data sheets, and analytical and appraisal methods.
- Ensure laboratory notebooks are legible, signed and thoroughly documented to protect company confidentiality and intellectual property.
- Assist with Regulatory Affairs activities and support applicable EPA and FDA requirements.
- Participate in the plant's Continuous Improvement Program and follow all company safety rules, regulations and good housekeeping practices.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry, applied chemistry or biochemistry.
- Five to ten years of relevant research and development experience.
- Proven ability to apply chemistry knowledge and the scientific method to create new formulations.
- Experience with good laboratory and manufacturing practices (GLP/GMP) relevant to household, industrial and institutional products, and/or cosmetic products.
- Hands-on experience preparing samples, conducting analyses, operating laboratory equipment, reviewing technical data, calibrating and maintaining equipment, and validating methods.
- Analytical chemistry experience, including HPLC and UV spectroscopy, with the ability to critique existing methods and develop new analytical capabilities.
- Knowledge of GMP requirements for household products.
- Strong research and computer skills, including the ability to learn technical databases and conduct detailed technical research.
- Excellent organization and project-management skills, with the ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong written reporting and verbal communication skills, along with a creative and analytical approach to problem-solving.
- Knowledge of FDA requirements under 21 CFR Parts 210 and 211 for OTC products and EPA product-registration requirements.
- Laboratory-based role with some exposure to the manufacturing plant.
- Regular standing for extended periods and occasional lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds.
- Normally eight-hour shifts, with day or afternoon shifts and overtime as required.
