Location: Based in EITHER Houston, TX OR Winnipeg, Canada
Position Overview
We are seeking a Technical Services Engineer with hands-on experience in the electric power industry to join our technical services team. The role delivers expert support for protection and control systems, troubleshooting relay and fault recorder issues, commissioning equipment in the field, and advising customers on system performance and improvements. The ideal candidate combines strong technical knowledge of relays, fault recorders, and power system protection with excellent customer-facing and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for protection relays, fault recorders, and associated control equipment both remotely and on-site.
• Perform commissioning, testing, and configuration of protection and control systems, including relays and disturbance recording devices.
• Analyze fault records and disturbance data to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
• Work with customers, field technicians, and engineering teams to develop and implement protection settings, testing procedures, and system upgrades.
• Prepare detailed technical reports, test plans, and documentation following industry standards and customer requirements.
• Deliver training and knowledge transfer to customers and internal teams on relay functionality, fault recorder usage, and best practices for protection systems.
• Participate in field service activities including emergency response, outage support, and scheduled maintenance.
• Collaborate with product engineering to provide feedback from the field to improve product functionality and usability.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related discipline preferred, or equivalent practical experience in the electric power industry.
• Minimum 35 years of experience working with protection relays and fault recorders in transmission or distribution environments.
• Strong knowledge of power system protection principles, relay coordination, CT/VT connections, and disturbance analysis.
• Experience with major relay manufacturers and their configuration tools (e.g., SEL, ABB, GE, Siemens) is highly desirable.
• Proven ability to analyze fault records, interpret waveforms, and prepare clear technical reports.
• Field commissioning and site-testing experience, including use of secondary injection test equipment and protective relay test sets.
• Excellent communication skills, customer-oriented mindset, and ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites and work occasional extended hours for commissioning or outage support.
