ABOUT US

At STRIVE Recruitment, we are a leading recruitment firm specialising in Accounting & Finance, Corporate Administration, Operations, and Technology. We take pride in connecting exceptional talent with outstanding employers across Canada. Our focus is on building long-term relationships while delivering a consultative and professional recruitment experience for both clients and candidates.

THE CLIENT

STRIVE Recruitment is partnered with a well-established and rapidly growing construction organisation based in the Lower Mainland. Our client is a leading contractor within its sector, supporting large-scale commercial, institutional, residential, and government construction projects across British Columbia.

Following significant growth over the past several years, the organisation continues to expand its finance function and is seeking to add an experienced Project Accountant to its team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with hands-on construction accounting experience who enjoys taking ownership of projects, partnering closely with Project Managers, and contributing financial insight throughout the full project lifecycle.

THE ROLE

The Project Accountant will take ownership of the accounting and financial performance of a portfolio of construction projects from initial setup through completion.

Working closely with Project Managers and the broader finance team, this position will be responsible for project forecasting, job costing, progress billing, subcontractor claims, change orders, committed costs, reconciliations, and monthly project reporting.

This is not purely a transactional project accounting position. The successful candidate will participate in monthly forecasting discussions with Project Managers, investigate project variances and cost discrepancies, and proactively identify financial trends and risks to help ensure projects remain financially on track.

The role offers exposure to sizeable and complex construction projects while providing opportunities to continue developing across project accounting, financial analysis, and broader accounting responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage full-cycle project accounting across a portfolio of active construction projects
  • Participate in monthly forecasting meetings with Project Managers and provide insight into project performance, trends, and financial risks
  • Prepare and maintain project forecasts, job cost reports, and supporting financial analysis
  • Monitor project budgets, committed costs, expenditures, and budget-to-actual variances
  • Prepare progress billings, client invoices, and supporting project documentation
  • Review and process subcontractor progress claims and investigate purchase order discrepancies
  • Complete monthly contract and subcontract reconciliations and ensure project reporting deadlines are met
  • Work closely with Project Managers to administer and track project change orders
  • Ensure approved change orders are accurately reflected within project budgets and accounting records
  • Reconcile accounting records and change-order logs against Project Manager records
  • Apply contract and subcontract terms to support accurate project billing and payments
  • Set up new projects within the construction ERP, including budgets, subcontracts, and required compliance information
  • Maintain accurate and audit-ready financial and compliance documentation throughout the project lifecycle
  • Identify job cost discrepancies and work directly with Project Managers to investigate and resolve issues
  • Support internal and external audit requirements as needed

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3–5 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally within construction or a project-based environment
  • Hands-on project accounting experience with a strong understanding of the monthly project accounting cycle
  • Experience with job costing, progress billing, change orders, subcontractor invoicing, committed costs, and project financial reporting
  • Experience preparing or supporting project forecasts and budget variance analysis
  • Construction industry experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working with Project Managers and operational stakeholders
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to analyse and manipulate project financial data
  • Experience working with construction ERP systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to identify project discrepancies and financial risks
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence explaining financial information to non-finance stakeholders
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and reporting deadlines
  • Accounting or Finance degree/diploma considered an asset
  • CPA pursuit or interest in completing the CPA program considered an asset
  • Experience with a mechanical contractor, general contractor, or speciality trade contractor considered a strong asset
  • Familiarity with BC construction regulations and compliance requirements considered an asset

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Base salary: $75,000–$85,000
  • 3 weeks vacation
  • Comprehensive extended health and dental benefits
  • RRSP matching program
  • Professional development and educational support, including CPA development
  • Exposure to large-scale and complex construction projects
  • Opportunity to broaden experience across project accounting and financial analysis
  • Long-term career progression within a growing organisation
  • Permanent, full-time opportunity
