Position OverviewThe Civil Estimator is responsible for supporting the successful pursuit of civil infrastructure and construction projects by preparing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates. This role analyzes contract documents, specifications, drawings, site conditions, and market information to develop estimates that support informed bidding and project decision-making.The Civil Estimator works closely with project teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders throughout the estimating and bid process. The position may lead smaller estimates or specific components of larger pursuits and may provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead small to medium-sized estimates or components of larger estimates and review all associated bid documents.
- Conduct detailed analysis of contract documents, drawings, specifications, and other project information to determine overall project requirements.
- Complete accurate quantity take-offs for labour, equipment, materials, and subcontracted work.
- Support the lead estimator by preparing tender forms, generating requests for information, identifying proposal requirements, and assisting with pursuit schedules.
- Identify and assess risks and opportunities related to project requirements, site conditions, schedules, contract terms, market conditions, and other constraints.
- Assist with bid document control by organizing, documenting, and maintaining all information related to estimates for an effective transition to the project team.
- Participate in bid-day activities and support estimating teams in successfully closing various scopes of work.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders.
- Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate competitive pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Establish and maintain critical path schedules for estimates and project pursuits.
- Provide mentoring, coaching, and guidance to junior or indirect team members as required.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes, procedures, tools, and best practices.
- Ensure estimates are prepared accurately, competitively, and in accordance with project requirements and company procedures.
- Bachelor's degree, diploma, or other post-secondary education in construction, engineering, quantity surveying, or a related discipline; equivalent trade or industry experience may also be considered.
- Approximately 4 years of progressive experience in construction cost estimating, with prior field or site experience considered an asset.
- Experience successfully leading or contributing to construction pursuits of significant value.
- Strong understanding of general construction principles, including drawings, specifications, materials, construction methods, and procedures.
- Intermediate knowledge of bid preparation principles, including quantity take-offs, subcontractor procurement, pricing, general expenses, and bid-closing procedures.
- Understanding of market conditions, business trends, historical project information, competitive factors, and pricing strategies.
- Familiarity with various project delivery methods, including hard bid, guaranteed maximum price (GMP), unit price, design-build, target price, and cost-reimbursable contracts.
- Strong ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, clients, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of construction estimating software.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight estimating and bid deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to adapt to and effectively utilize new estimating technologies and software.
