Job Title: Health and Safety Coordinator

Job Location: Welland, Ontario, Canada (Onsite)

Job Mode: Full-time

Job Description:

The Health and Safety Coordinator will be responsible for promoting a strong safety culture through proactive strategies and initiatives that reduce accidents, incidents, injuries, and near misses.

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the duties and responsibilities of the Health and Safety Coordinator include some of the following:

  • Work with management team to develop and implement proactive strategies and initiatives to reduce accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses and to promote a strong safety culture
  • Develop, review, update and implement health and safety policies and procedures, including PPE, safe operation of cranes and mobile equipment, confined workspace, fire safety, asbestos, lead, and silica programs, as well as environmental compliance
  • Escalate health, safety and environmental issues to management
  • Maintain and manage all health and safety data and records, including training, first aid records, incident, accident and near-miss reports, equipment, and workplace inspections.
  • Report to management team on compliance issues, trend analysis and risk management solutions
  • Report safety statistics (i.e. root cause analysis on compliance issues, near misses, injuries, etc.) to senior management on a monthly basis
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety and environmental legislation and liaise with outside consultants and regulatory bodies as required
  • Coordinate and conduct accident, incident and near-miss investigations, as required
  • Schedule and administer all employee health and safety training
  • Deliver health and safety on-boarding program to new employees
  • Administer and ensure compliance with contractor and visitor safety programs
  • Act as management representative on workplace JHSC and participate in monthly workplace inspections
  • Ensure environmental monitoring, testing and reporting requirements are met
  • Coordinate all environmental projects (e.g. air emission testing, site remediation, hazardous materials surveys/abatement, etc.) as directed
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Post-secondary education with focus on Environmental Science and/or Health and Safety or related field of study
  • Experience working in a heavy industrial environment
  • Joint Health and Safety Committee Management Certification – must be willing to obtain
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) – or working towards would be considered an asset
  • Must have good knowledge of the OHSA and related regulations
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Must be able and willing to deliver training in a group setting
  • Ability to meet and manage competing deadlines and handle multiple priorities and demands
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with good organizational and planning skills

  • This is filling an existing vacancy
  • This is a salaried position paying $60,000 - $75,000 annually
  • This position is eligible for overtime earned at time and a half after 44 hours worked in a week
