Senior Project Manager

Utility-Scale Renewable Energy Projects

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Employment: Permanent, full-time

Base Salary: CAD $150,000–$200,000+, depending on experience

Incentive: 30%+ annual performance bonus

About the Company

Our client is an established renewable energy developer and owner advancing a portfolio of utility-scale solar and energy infrastructure projects in Canada.

The company operates with a small, experienced, and highly collaborative team. Project leaders work directly with engineering, development, legal, finance, investors, lenders, consultants, contractors, and senior executives without unnecessary layers of bureaucracy.

The Opportunity

The company is hiring Senior Project Managers to lead large, transmission-connected solar projects in Northern Ontario.

These projects involve remote locations, northern climate conditions, challenging terrain, high-voltage interconnection, complex stakeholder requirements, and significant capital investment.

This is an owner-side project delivery role with full accountability for assigned projects from late-stage development through permitting, engineering, procurement, construction, energization, commissioning, commercial operation, and closeout.

This is a permanent position supporting a long-term project pipeline, not a temporary project assignment. Each Project Manager may oversee multiple projects at different stages of development and execution.

What You Will Own

  • Lead assigned utility-scale renewable energy projects on behalf of the owner.
  • Establish project priorities, decision paths, schedules, budgets, resource plans, and team accountability.
  • Advance projects through permitting, land obligations, engineering, procurement, construction, testing, energization, commissioning, commercial operation, and closeout.
  • Manage integrated schedules, cost forecasts, cash flow, risk registers, change logs, and executive reporting.
  • Identify technical, commercial, schedule, and delivery risks early and implement practical mitigation plans.
  • Lead contract and contractor management, including scope development, negotiations, notices, change orders, claims, schedule recovery, performance management, and compliance.
  • Select, direct, and hold accountable owner's engineers, EPC contractors, consultants, construction managers, field representatives, vendors, and other external partners.
  • Review designs, technical recommendations, and constructability decisions with engineering teams.
  • Make informed owner-side decisions without acting as the engineer of record.
  • Coordinate transmission interconnection and project interfaces with grid operators, transmission utilities, lenders, investors, independent engineers, and technical advisors.
  • Lead engagement with municipalities, provincial authorities, landowners, neighbours, local communities, and Indigenous partners.
  • Oversee project health and safety, environmental compliance, quality, documentation, turnover readiness, and closeout.

What Success Looks Like

  • Projects achieve development, construction, energization, and commercial-operation milestones safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Technical and commercial risks are identified and managed before they become expensive surprises.
  • Contractors, consultants, utilities, lenders, investors, communities, and senior leaders trust the information and commitments provided by the project team.
  • Project decisions are documented clearly, escalated appropriately, and followed through to resolution.
  • Delivery standards and lessons learned are incorporated into future projects.

Required Experience and Capabilities

  • Significant progressive experience delivering complex, multi-year, high-capital energy, power, or infrastructure projects.
  • Direct accountability for overall project outcomes, including schedule, cost, risk, contractors, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Demonstrated project management leadership beyond supporting one workstream or another Project Manager.
  • Strong contract, contractor, and subcontractor management experience.
  • Experience managing commercial negotiations, change orders, claims, delays, performance issues, and schedule recovery.
  • Technical fluency sufficient to evaluate engineering, construction, interconnection, constructability, and project risk.
  • Strong communication, executive presence, judgement, and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across technical, commercial, legal, financial, regulatory, and community stakeholders.
  • Comfort operating in a lean, fast-moving organization with broad individual accountability.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.

Preferred Background

  • Utility-scale renewable energy project delivery experience.
  • Utility-scale solar experience is strongly preferred.
  • Candidates from wind, battery storage, transmission, substations, or adjacent power infrastructure may also be considered.
  • Experience with transmission-connected generation, high-voltage systems, substations, transmission lines, or grid interconnection.
  • Experience delivering projects in Canada, particularly in northern climates, remote locations, or challenging terrain.
  • Experience working with provincial permitting authorities, utilities, lenders, independent engineers, or owner's engineers.
  • Experience engaging landowners, municipalities, ministries, local communities, and Indigenous partners.
  • Experience with procurement, EPC selection, contract negotiation, claims, and change-order management.
  • Degree in electrical, civil, mechanical, or another relevant engineering discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent technical, construction, or trades-based experience will also be considered.
  • PMP certification and/or P.Eng designation is an asset but not required.

Work Location and Travel

The role is based in the Toronto area. Regular in-office collaboration is expected during pre-construction and project setup because of the volume of internal coordination, contract work, and decision-making.

Reasonable flexibility may be considered for exceptional candidates, and the working arrangement is expected to become more flexible once construction is underway.

Travel to remote Northern Ontario project sites is required, generally once every four to six weeks. During critical construction, commissioning, or issue-resolution periods, site presence may increase to approximately two weeks in a month.

Relocation assistance may be considered individually.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary of CAD $150,000–$200,000, with flexibility above the range for an exceptional candidate.
