Client Support Worker (Supportive Housing)
Waasegiizhig Nanaandaweiyewigamig provides wholistic, primary health care to Indigenous people in
Kenora and surrounding First Nation communities through a range of options including prevention,
assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Our client-centered, interprofessional teams include health
professionals, educators and support workers representing both traditional Indigenous, contemporary
models of care and use medical and community development concepts.
The position supports the Supportive Housing Program will operate in a 24/7 format with shift work
included in this position. Responsibilities include monitoring and supporting clients, preparing program
materials, and assisting with group sessions which will often include outdoor and hands-on activities. With
an Indigenous approach, cultural assessments, and medicine wheel teachings, we hope to guide and help
those in our program through their healing journey by providing safe housing. The program will also provide
referrals to partner organizations.
NOTE: Traditional practices involve cultural ceremonies and burning sacred medicines including tobacco,
sweetgrass, sage and cedar within the work setting.
PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support clients to participate in Journey Planning; identifying goals and exploring resources needed
to reachtheir goals and outcomes.
Coordination of case management needs; working closely with clients to educate and build
independence to seek out resources and services and how to navigate the health care system to
build capacity.
Supporting clients with seeking out addiction services and mental health resources they may be
interested in.
Complete client intake and assist with accessing needed services, including health care, cultural
supports, meals, and transportation.
Support clients in a variety of ways such as role modeling, teachings, demonstrations and working
alongside towards developing clients daily living skills.
Work together as a team to maintain a safe, comfortable and clean facilities, and an adequate
inventory of supplies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
minimum OSSD or equivalent; some experience working in the health care field an asset;
demonstrated understanding of wholistic health and well-being; personal experience or strong
knowledge of the healing journey and abstinence from mind altering chemicals;
ability and willingness to work shift hours and weekends;
demonstrated oral and written communication skills (including computer skills); excellent
interpersonal skills to deal effectively with a wide variety of people;
deep understanding and experience of Indigenous culture, values, and perspectives as well as
traditional and contemporary health care practices, and wholistic health and wellbeing; ability to
speak and understand Anishinaabemowin a definite asset;
experience working in an Indigenous organization; understanding and/or willingness to learn of
Indigenous culture and values;
proof of immunization in compliance with policy requirements is mandatory;
valid drivers license, own vehicle and willingness and ability to travel required;
criminal records check and current drivers abstract required;
commitment to ongoing training and professional development relevant to job requirements; and
positive attitude and capacity to act as a healthy lifestyle role model
SALARY: $28.98 per hour.
