Job Title: Financial Accountant
Job Description
The Financial Accountant oversees the preparation, analysis, and presentation of financial statements while leading a high-performing accounts receivable team. This role ensures the accuracy of key reconciliations, supports annual budgeting, and drives process improvements to shorten close timelines. The position also serves as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, providing clear financial insights and maintaining strong relationships across the business.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and present accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with applicable standards.
- Review and analyze all supporting reconciliations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank accounts, income tax, fixed assets, and intercompany balances.
- Perform detailed trend analysis of financial statements to identify variances, risks, and opportunities, and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.
- Support the annual budgeting process by providing financial data, analysis, and insight to help shape business plans and forecasts.
- Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries from internal and external clients, providing clear explanations and supporting documentation as needed.
- Lead a team of approximately five to seven accounts receivable resources, located in multiple offices, ensuring high-quality and timely delivery of work.
- Take ownership of the team's performance by setting expectations, holding team members accountable, and monitoring delivery against deadlines and quality standards.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and performance reviews with team members, including KPI discussions, feedback, and goal setting.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and support to junior team members, including reviewing and checking their work for accuracy and completeness.
- Drive process improvements and enhancements within the financial close and reporting cycle, with a focus on reducing close timelines wherever possible.
- Collaborate closely with finance stakeholders, including the lead Financial Accountant for the Agile Team and Operations leadership, to align financial processes with business needs.
- Utilize advanced Excel functionality to analyze large data sets, perform reconciliations, and support reporting and budgeting activities.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of financial policies, procedures, and controls to support a growing organization.
- Build strong relationships with colleagues across finance and operations, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills by explaining complex financial information in a clear and engaging manner to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
Essential Skills
- CPA designation.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in financial statement preparation, including full-cycle financial reporting responsibilities.
- Experience performing trend analysis of financial statements and explaining key variances and drivers.
- Hands-on experience with reconciliations for accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank accounts, income tax, fixed assets, and intercompany accounts.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and SUMIFS functions.
- Proven experience reviewing and checking the work of junior team members for accuracy and completeness.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly and confidently.
- Ability to build rapport, trust, and respect with team members and stakeholders.
- Positive, proactive attitude with a focus on collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and hold team members accountable for results.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Power BI experience for financial reporting and analysis.
- Supervisory experience gained in a public practice environment.
- Extensive experience leading or contributing to process improvement initiatives, particularly within the financial close and reporting cycle.
- Prior experience in the insurance sector.
- Experience supporting or leading budgeting processes.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with an engaging and well-spoken communication style.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-growing, dynamic organization and adapt to evolving processes.
Work Environment
This role is based in a modern, brand-new office and can be located in either Dartmouth or Surrey, with a slight preference for Dartmouth. The position reports into finance leadership and leads a team of 5–7 accounts receivable resources split between Surrey and Dartmouth. You will work closely with finance and operations leaders, including finance and operations stakeholders, in a collaborative, easy-going, and supportive culture. The standard workday is 7 hours with flexible start times between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., and includes a 1-hour unpaid lunch. The work model is hybrid, with two days per week in the office; Tuesday is a set in-office day, and the second day can be chosen. The office is transit accessible, though options may be limited, and a monthly parking pass is available as a taxable benefit. The company operates on a 35-hour work week and is in a period of hyper-growth, offering strong opportunities for upward career progression.
