Company Name: Samee Metal Trading
Location: Hamilton, Ontario
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent (40 hours per week)
About the Role
We are seeking a highly specialized Steel Rail & Intermodal Logistics Manager to oversee, direct, and optimize our high-volume rail and intermodal transportation functions.
This is a senior operational role. The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic planning, budgeting, and execution of complex steel freight movements, directly managing relationships with Class I railroads, intermodal carriers, transloaders, and drayage providers. This role is vital to ensuring customer delivery continuity, freight cost control, and the seamless transit of heavy industrial steel products.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Transportation Management
- Plan, direct, and control all railcar routing, intermodal container movements, and flatbed freight alternatives for cross-border (Canada/US) steel supply chains.
- Optimize supply chain networks to support corporate environmental and net-zero targets, utilizing specialized skills in modal-shift mechanics to transition high-volume freight from high-emission road transport to fuel-efficient rail and intermodal networks.
Vendor Negotiation & Budgeting
- Establish, monitor, and report on annual transportation budgets. Negotiate freight rates, service level agreements (SLAs), and demurrage/detention terms directly with major railway companies, drayage carriers, and transload facilities.
Operational Execution
- Oversee daily specialized railcar planning (including gondolas and centerbeams), transloading operations, and complex multi-modal routing to maximize cost-efficiency and minimize transit delays.
- Direct all aspects of railcar fleet management, including private rolling stock lease tracking, fleet maintenance coordination, and car pooling mechanics to minimize demurrage liabilities.
Risk & Cost Mitigation
- Analyze logistics data to make critical, cost-based routing decisions, mitigate supply chain bottlenecks, and manage complex cross-border customs logistics specific to steel products.
Process Optimization
- Develop and implement standardized operational workflows for specialized steel handling, ensuring strict compliance with rail safety regulations and weight restrictions.
Executive Collaboration
- Work directly with executive leadership to align transportation capacity with corporate sales forecasts and production schedules
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, International Trade, Structural/Industrial Engineering or related field. A post-graduate certification in Supply Chain Logistics (e.g., CSCP, CCLP, or P.Log) is highly preferred.
- Core Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience in rail logistics, intermodal transportation, or supply chain operations. Hands-on managerial experience strictly within heavy industrial manufacturing or primary metal (steel/iron) supply chains.
- Class I Rail Operational Expertise: Minimum of 3 years of direct, hands-on operational experience managing industrial freight distribution across Class I Rail Networks (specifically CN, CPKC, CSX, and NS).
- Railcar Fleet Mechanics: Handling structural variations and load capacities of industrial rolling stock, specifically mill gondolas, center beam flatcars, and covered hoppers.
- Precision Weight Engineering: Calculating axle-weight limitation formulas, gross rail load limits (e.g., 286,000 lbs.), and center-of-gravity placement to ensure strict track safety compliance.
- Logistical Assets & Pooling: Managing private railcar lease agreements, tracing car movements, and coordinating railcar pooling mechanics to eliminate demurrage liabilities.
- Cross-Border Regulatory Mastery: Proven expertise in cross-border (Canada–US) transport regulations, including direct handling of CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) and CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) documentation, bonded freight management, and specialized steel tariff codes (HTS/HS codes).
