Maple Leaf Dairy is seeking a dedicated and experienced Dairy Herd Manager to oversee the daily operations of our 500-cow dairy farm. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of herd health, feeding, milking, and breeding programs, as well as managing a team of 5 farmhands. This role requires a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of dairy farming best practices.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement herd health protocols, including vaccination schedules and disease prevention measures.
- Manage the feeding program, ensuring optimal nutrition for all animals.
- Oversee the milking process, maintaining high standards of hygiene and milk quality.
- Coordinate breeding programs, utilizing artificial insemination and embryo transfer techniques.
- Monitor milk production and quality, identifying and addressing any issues.
- Manage and train farmhands, ensuring a safe and productive work environment.
- Maintain accurate records of herd health, production, and breeding.
- Manage budgets and expenses, related to all livestock activities
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and industry standards.
- Basic mechanics on machinery is considered an asset.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in dairy herd management.
- Degree in Animal Science or a related field is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of dairy cattle health, nutrition, and breeding.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in using dairy management software.
- Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
