Calling consecrated bakers! We are looking for a Pastry Chef/Baker proficient to bake delicious pastries and interested to learn Einkorn artisan breads! Must be experienced in pastries, high volume baking, operating mixers and able to lift up to 40 lbs.

Job Overview

Our team member will be confident in their craft and will not need to be taught the basics of pastry chef skills. The Pastry Chef/Baker needs to have formal pastry training OR equivalent experience, and should be skilled in both following creating pastry recipes for desserts and viennoiserie, including preparation of emulsions, fillings and creams. Must have an aptitude to adapt to working with dairy-free substitutes to create visually appealing and delicious pastry and bread.

We don't just bake; we craft quality products efficiently and need someone who brings speed, accuracy, and positive energy to the team.

NO prior breadmaking experience is preferred. Training will be provided to this person to gain our specific artisan bread-making and milling skills. However a willingness and enthusiasm to add artisan bread-making skills to your pastry repertoire is required!

About Us

The Einkorn Shoppe is a newly opening artisan bakery in Oakville specializing in low-gluten Einkorn yeasted breads. The Shoppe offers menu items that include loaves, bagels, buns, muffins, cookies, tarts, and an array of viennoiserie. Key ingredients we use include exclusively Einkorn flour and dairy-free alternatives, as well as sourdough, non-refined sugars and natural sweeteners, with limited use of eggs.

Duties

  • Prepare and bake a variety of bread, viennoiserie, pastry, and desserts according to established recipes and standards
  • Create visually appealing and delicious pastry and bread
  • Ensure all baked goods meet quality and presentation standards before serving or packaging
  • Assist in food preparation tasks related to bakery items, including sandwiches and prepared bakery cafe meals
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, adhering to food safety guidelines
  • Package baked goods for retail, online orders or catering purposes with attention to detail
  • Collaborate with team to ensure timely production and delivery of bakery items
  • Follow all food handling and safety procedures to ensure a safe working environment

Experience

  • Pastry/culinary school training or equivalent experience
  • 1 to 3 years previous experience in a commercial bakery or large volume food production setting is highly preferred
  • Experience with commercial kitchen equipment used in baking and pastry arts
  • Skilled in viennoiserie, pastry, plant-based baking, food preparation (sandwiches) and pastry-making techniques
  • Skilled in emulsions such as mayo, fillings, jams, curd, caramel and pastry cream
  • Knowledge of food safety standards and proper food handling procedures
  • Strong customer service skills are a plus, especially for interacting with guests or clients directly
  • Familiarity with the food industry environment, including packaging and presentation of baked goods
  • Skill in using Einkorn flour and making bakery products from Einkorn is a bonus
  • Skill in milling and sifting flour is a bonus
  • Able to receive critique constructively and enthusiastically follow owner's decisions and directions (Unable to receive a 'no' to your idea will not work in this environment. All will be heard, but not all ideas will be used!)

Required: Workers must be able to stand for long hours, frequently lift heavy bags of ingredients and batches of dough (up to 40lbs) and work in a fast paced environment. Food Handler's certificate is required.

Attire: Bakers will be requested to use their own pastry uniform kit. This is expected to washed after every single shift.

Shift Timing: Due to nature of a start-up there are no-guaranteed minimum hours. However, anticipated shifts: 7AM to 5PM, Monday to Wednesday, 7AM to 12pm Thursday and 12PM to 5PM Sunday for 40 hours per week. Additional shifts as required, however no shifts Friday evenings/Saturdays. Potential for long-term work with a good partnership.

Compensation: Starting pay based on experience/skill

This position is ideal for an individual who understands that startup needs change quickly and are flexible to support the culinary and front counter team where needed. Even in a start-up environment this person is able to deliver high-quality work on time.
