Title: Community Justice Worker (Youth Reintegration)
Reports to: Youth Services Manager
Compensation: $51,528.00 per annual
Employment Type: Full-Time, Fixed-Term Contract
Contract Term: This is a fixed-term contract until March 31, 2027.
The John Howard Society is a criminal justice agency that provides services in the areas of prevention, intervention, and reintegration. Our primary focus is to reduce the impact of crime and its causes through the delivery of relevant programs.
Position Summary:
Reintegration Program provides evidence-based case management support to Individual involved in the justice system. This program specifically supports Indigenous, Black, and other racialized Individuals. This program will focus on providing specialized supports to build protective factors in clients through case management, intensive support, referrals to community resources, client advocacy and collaboration, and individual goal planning. The program utilizes a collaborative and integrated approach to increase protective factors which may include establishing positive support systems, social and emotional learning, accessing healthcare for both physical and mental health, food security, housing stability, employment, and education.
The function of this position is to provide support to individuals who are involved with the Criminal Justice System and are living or returning to communities in York Region. The Reintegration Worker will conduct intake assessments; needs assessments; goal planning and learning activities; as well as provide housing support and referrals to community resources.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake assessments, YASI assessments and needs/risk assessments with youth
- Conduct 1:1 sessions with youth to support with goal planning, including support with resume building, social and emotional learning, life skills, financial literacy, and coping skills
- Provide individualized 1:1 case management, including goal planning, rsum development, social and emotional learning, life skills, financial literacy, and coping skills support.
- Maintain regular case management apointments and proactive follow-up with clients.
- Develop and implement goal plans and deliver learning activities tailored to client needs
- Provide on-site support at office locations, courthouses, in the community, and in institutions, as required.
- Design, coordinate, and facilitate culturally relevant workshops for incarcerated youth
- Provide advocacy and support for community-based referrals
- Attend the Roy McMurtry Detention Centre to provide onsite support for incarcerated youth
- Apply firsthand experience and/or strong working knowledge of legal aspects of the criminal justice system, specifically for youth (e.g., bail, sentencing, custody, supervision).
- Maintain and strengthen partnerships with community agencies, supporting collaboration and partnership development as directed by the Youth Services Manager
- Maintain accurate statistical data, client intake records, financial logs, and other program documentation
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation, including client consent, to support program evaluation
- Record program statistics accurately and assist Youth Services Manager with reporting tasks
- Participate in committees and working groups as assigned.
- Uphold program standards and engage in ongoing professional development activities.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and colleagues at all times.
- Demonstrate a non-judgmental, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approach in all aspects of work.
- Attend staff/team meetings and agency/community events as required.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet program and client needs.
- Serve as a JHSYR Designated Bingo Ambassador at least once per quarter to support community engagement and program funding.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Youth Services Manager.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Social Work, Criminology, Addictions and Mental Health, Child and Youth Care) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working withBIPOC, and justice-involved youth,using trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches to address mental health, trauma, substance use, relationships, and system involvement.
- Experience providing case management support
- Lived experience of involvement with the criminal justice system, welfare system, and/or mental health system is an asset
- Demonstrate understanding of the YCJA and complex criminogenic risks and needs facing youth
- Professional demeanor with strong rapport-building and relationship-building skills
- Ability to actively listen and provide empathetic, client-centered support
- Knowledge of goal planning, mental health, and wellness activities, with the ability to adapt or develop new learning activities
- Ability to maintain relationships with community agencies and stakeholders
- Knowledge of community resources throughout York Region with the ability to seek out new community resources as needed
- Knowledge in suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention skills and safety planning; and ability to manage conflict, crises and escalating situations calmly and confidently
- Approach work through a trauma-informed and client-centered lens
- Strong administrative, documentation, and organizational skills

- Ability to apply a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and client-centered approach.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and online meeting platforms
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, with awareness of socioeconomic and linguistic barriers
- Access to a vehicle is preferred.
- Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance for provincial and federal institutions.
- Ability to speak multiple languages is considered an asset.
