Communications Coordinator - Existing position - Maternity Leave (one-year)

Band 2: $53,188 - $66,485 **Compensation is aligned with internal equity and market benchmarks. In limited circumstances, offers above the posted range may be considered for candidates with exceptional qualifications or highly specialized expertise**

This role, as with all positions at ITK is 100% in-office,requires being in the office full-timeat 75 Albert Street, Ottawa, ON.

JOB SUMMARY

The Communications Coordinator supports the delivery of day-to-day communications activities at Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), contributing to content development, media monitoring, and event coordination.

This role provides hands-on support across a range of communications functions, including writing, social media, and event logistics. Working closely with the Communications team and colleagues across ITK, the Coordinator helps ensure communications are clear, engaging, and reflective of Inuit perspectives and priorities.

The successful candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT

  • Support the implementation of communications plans and activities aligned with ITK priorities.
  • Assist with coordinating communications deliverables, ensuring timelines and approvals are met.
  • Track and monitor communications activities, flagging issues or delays as needed.

CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

  • Draft and edit a range of communications materials, including news releases, social media content, website updates, newsletters, and reports.
  • Prepare content for publication, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and accessibility.
  • Support content updates across digital platforms, including website and social media channels.

MEDIA & ISSUES SUPPORT

  • Monitor media coverage and prepare summaries and briefings for internal use
  • Assist in drafting media responses, key messages, and background materials
  • Support media activities, including interview coordination and logistics

EVENT COORDINATION

  • Coordinate logistics for events, including announcements, workshops, and national gatherings.
  • Support event communications, including materials preparation and on-site assistance.
  • Liaise with internal teams and external partners to support event delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms
  • Understanding of Inuit Nunangat, Inuit history, and Inuit governance structures
  • Familiarity with media relations, social media platforms, and event coordination
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail
  • Ability to follow processes, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, WordPress, and social media tools
  • Basic design, photography, or multimedia skills are an asset

EXPERIENCE

  • 1-2 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting communications activities, events, or campaigns is an asset.
  • Experience working with Inuit or Indigenous organizations is an asset.

EDUCATION

  • Degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism, Indigenous Studies, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Must be committed to ITKs mandate and sensitivity to Inuit culture and perspectives.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
