Your Role at a Glance
Youll be responsible for managing and adjusting Property, Liability, and Auto (Physical Damage only) claims from first notice of loss through to resolution. By providing clear communication, timely action, and a fair and thorough investigation, youll ensure a smooth and supportive claims experience for our policyholders.
Key Responsibilities
Claims Handling (85%)
- Customer Service & Communication:
- Make timely contact with policyholders and claimants.
- Explain policy coverage, claims procedures, and expectations clearly and compassionately.
- Maintain transparent communication throughout the claim lifecycle.
- Coverage Assessment:
- Review and apply policy terms to determine coverage.
- Issue and document coverage concerns through Non-Waiver or Reservation of Rights letters.
- Obtain legal opinions when necessary.
- Investigation & Evaluation:
- Conduct thorough investigations, determine cause and extent of loss.
- Retain experts when needed to assist in cause and responsibility determination.
- Verify claim scope and value and identify all involved parties.
- Adjustment & Settlement:
- Assess damages and negotiate settlements based on policy terms and current laws.
- Execute payments in exchange for necessary documentation (Proof of Loss, Release, etc.).
- Identify subrogation opportunities and manage liability exposure.
- Litigation Management (when required):
- Assign and manage defense counsel.
- Participate in legal proceedings including settlement strategy, mediations, and trials.
- File Management & Documentation:
- Maintain detailed file notes and documentation.
- Regularly review and adjust reserves.
- Ensure timely progression and closure of all claim files.
Departmental & Development Responsibilities (15%)
- Support and participate in department meetings and company strategic initiatives
- Stay current with relevant legislation, industry best practices, and form changes
- Foster strong relationships with brokers, contractors, and industry partners
- Represent HTM at industry events and maintain active organizational memberships
- Support colleagues and contribute to a collaborative, team-based environment
What You Bring
- Post-secondary education in Business or Law
- CIP designation (FCIP an asset)
- 810 years of experience in multi-line claims adjusting
- Prior experience with a mutual insurance company is highly valued
- Strong understanding of P&C insurance, policy forms, coverage application, and insurance law
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Superior organization, time management, and negotiation abilities
- A high level of integrity, attention to detail, and customer focus
- Valid drivers license and access to a vehicle
