Reporting to the Childcare Supervisor and Childcare Coordinators, the Childcare Professional Float and Cook position will foster an inclusive early learning and childcare environment that supports children's development. This role works closely with team members to ensure efficient day-to-day operations and provides float coverage for planning, breaks and absences. This position is also responsible for preparing and serving appetizing and nutritionally balanced and healthy meals for children aged 1 to 5. This role maintains high standards of quality food production and strictly adheres to Alberta Health Care regulations and the Alberta Childcare Licensing Act.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position requiring availability between 7:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Schedule and duties, including time spent in the kitchen and childcare areas, may vary based on operational needs. The role involves physical activity such as lifting children up to 30 pounds, bending, sitting on the floor, and standing or walking for extended periods.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide attuned and responsive day-to-day care, guidance and programming for children in a safe, secure and consistent team environment.
  • Implement programming that supports child development through play.
  • Maintain a child-friendly, stimulating playroom environment with age-appropriate games and activities.
  • Arrange for appropriate playroom décor that incorporates multiculturalism and diversity.
  • Interact and relate to children in a developmentally appropriate manner and encourage their involvement in outdoor and indoor activities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and provide care in a manner that is sensitive to individual child differences, interests and needs; adjust care and tailor activities to meet those interests and needs.
  • Allow children to lead play and be autonomous in making decisions.
  • Ensure children's health, safety and well-being through constant and effective supervision.
  • Maintain daily attendance and administrative records according to program and licensing standards.
  • Establish and foster relationships with families; maintain strong communication with parents daily using Lillio, notes and/or verbally.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Canada Food Guidelines (CFG) and verify that meals and snacks are in compliance with the Canada Food Guide.
  • Oversee meal and snack time activities; provide diapering and toileting support.
  • Help ensure food supplies and food storage is adequate for the schedule of use; effectively and securely store and organize food supplies.
  • Assist primary Cook in meal and snack preparation, following a set menu plan; follow protocols for food restrictions and allergies in meal preparation and serving.
  • Allocate servings according to childcare rooms and individual child needs.
  • Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary's success.
  • Understand YW Calgary's Health, Safety and Wellness (HS&W) policies, practices and protocols; ensure work is performed safely and in alignment with YW's HS&W culture.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Early Learning and Childcare Diploma or equivalent.
  • Early Learning and Childcare Certificate Level 2 or 3 preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience implementing Flight: Alberta Early Learning and Care Framework is an asset.
  • Minimum 1 - 2 years' experience in a Childcare Centre.
  • Knowledge of the Province of Alberta's childcare regulations and Alberta Health Standards for Childcare
  • Decision making skills that demonstrate a strong practical and theoretical understanding of child development.
  • Takes initiative to develop and maintain current knowledge of early childhood development practices and parenting strategies and able to incorporate feedback.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working in a commercial and/or Childcare kitchen, and planning and preparing nutritionally balanced menus and food for large groups is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply basic food preparation methods (baking, grilling etc.).
  • Knowledge of the Canada Food Guide as well as trends and best practices in nutrition.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic food preparation for infants, toddlers, and pre-school aged children.
  • Strong time-management skills, ability to prioritize work effectively.
  • Clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Record Check is required upon hire.
