ABOUT THE STUDENTS UNION

The University of Alberta Students Union (UASU) is the official student-run organization for undergraduates at the University of Alberta. We aim to improve the undergraduate student experience through the services, events and spaces that we provide. We also advocate on behalf of students within the university community, and to all levels of government.

Overview

The Student Services department is a creative, collaborative place where programs, supports and involvement opportunities are run by and for the students they serve. This position supports a team of student and professional staff in their work to ensure that student services remain cutting-edge, pertinent, and aligned with the present interests of students. Current services offered include a peer based mental health support program, information services, a volunteer-based safe walk program, a bike library, a thrift pop up, a campus garden and a sustainability focused market.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Provide operational oversight and intervention where necessary in all student services within the student life portfolio. This includes:
    1. Ensuring the effective, efficient operation of all services;
    2. Identifying and acting upon opportunities to improve service delivery, as well as strategies to better integrate services with each other and other parts of the organization;
    3. Developing and supervising the execution of strategies to improve services;
    4. Identifying, reporting on, and developing solutions to emerging areas of student need;
    5. Operationalizing strategic guidance from the UASU Strategic Plan, and/or the Executive Committee.
  2. Provide leadership, management and administrative acumen to the unit. This includes:
    1. Providing supervision, coaching and development opportunities for multiple direct and indirect reports, including both professional and student staff;
    2. Providing support and direction to direct reports in the execution of their own supervisory responsibilities, including recognition, development and discipline;
    3. Ensuring compliance with HR policies and procedures, including contracting, time tracking, performance management and discipline, termination and payroll.
    4. Developing and controlling budgets for service areas.
  3. Coordinate responses to high risk situations, such as mental health crises, with direction from the Senior Leadership Team, Student Services and support from the relevant Program Lead.
    1. Provide support and resource referrals to volunteers during Peer Support operating hours as the staff on call
  4. Effectively manage relationships within and outside of the organization that are necessary for the operations of the department. This includes:
    1. Proactively create and maintain relationships with key service partners, including other UASU staff, University of Alberta staff, and the staff of other student associations;
    2. Actively facilitate two-way communication so the UASU remains apprised of important developments in the work of our partners, and that partners understand the direction and goals of the UASU.
  5. Ensuring coordination between departments, services, and University Units
  6. Other duties as assigned by the Assistant General Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Hold an undergraduate degree. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  2. 3+ years of direct supervisory and program management experience.
  3. Eligible to work in Canada.
  4. Able to work on site in our offices located on The University of Alberta's North Campus, in Edmonton, Alberta.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Formal training in project management, continuous improvement methodologies, managerial practice, or program assessment.
  2. Experience with or training on principles of adult education, student development, and/or Universal Design for Learning.
  3. Trainings or certifications related to mental health, wellness, and crisis intervention such as Mental Health First Aid, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, or trainings related to sexual violence prevention.
  4. Experience with managing crisis situations and disclosures, such as risks of suicidality, self-harm, and disclosures of sexual assault or misconduct.
  5. Experience with strategic planning, goal setting or similar practices at a unit or departmental level.
  6. Knowledge of student development theories, student leadership models, and current trends in student affairs is an asset.
  7. Formal education in Equity Diversity and Inclusion or experience working with and serving equity-seeking groups.
  8. Experience with budget development and management, particularly in a non-profit setting.
  9. Experience with the University of Alberta or a similar-sized post-secondary institution, its communities, governance structures, and student supports.
  10. Previous work or volunteer experience with a Students Association.

Terms of Employment:

Location: This work is primarily in person on the University of Alberta campus. Hybrid work may be accommodated; however, not during the first few weeks of each semester.
