Senior Systems Developer
Halifax, NS or Remote (Canada) | Permanent | Software Development

Venor is proud to partner with Byos in their search for a Senior Systems Developer to join their growing team.

Byos' microsegmentation platform delivers next-level endpoint security, providing invisibility, isolation, and secure access without exposing devices or risking data leakage. Built for Zero Trust networking and compatible with diverse devices and environments, Byos technology powers secure operations in industries like Critical Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Defense, Energy, and Financial Services. From protecting plant floor machinery to safeguarding individual laptops, the work you'll do here has real-world impact on the security of systems people rely on every day.

The Senior Systems Developer will play a critical role in building and maintaining the software that powers Byos' security infrastructure. This is a highly technical role requiring deep expertise in Linux systems, networking, and Python development. Reporting to the CTO, you will design, develop, and optimize system-level applications that interface with networking, security, and database components, directly impacting the performance, security, and scalability of Byos products.

What you'll be doing:

  • Designing and developing software to translate information into firewall rules, routing table updates, and database models.

  • Configuring and managing Linux firewalls (nftables, iptables) and routing tables.

  • Building functional, extensible interfaces between Byos infrastructure components.

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to decompose complex requirements into manageable deliverables.

  • Conducting unit testing in Python to ensure software quality and maintainability.

  • Documenting technical decisions, designs, and implementation details clearly and thoroughly.

  • Applying strong software engineering discipline and best practices to all development activities.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of Linux systems administration experience, including strong command-line proficiency (nft, awk, sed, ip, ifconfig).

  • Proven hands-on experience configuring Linux firewalls, specifically using nft; experience with iptables is an asset.

  • Deep understanding of firewalls, routing tables, and network traffic management (conceptual knowledge prioritized over tool-specific expertise).

  • Several years of Python development experience with strong fundamentals (non-web framework focus).

  • Unit testing experience in Python.

  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles and system design.

  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Assets (experience with any of the following):

  • dbus.

  • RabbitMQ, STOMP, AMQP 0.9.1.

  • PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, Alembic.

  • OpenVPN, OpenSSL.

  • Docker.

What's in it for you:

  • Office in Volta – Canada's East Coast Innovation Hub.

  • Health, Dental, and Professional coverage for you and your family start immediately.

  • Flexible working hours/environment with generous home office allowance.

  • One paid holiday per month + ‘Holiday Shutdown' between Christmas and New Years.

  • Three weeks' vacation (in addition to holiday shut down).

At Venor and Byos, we embrace a culture of belonging in the workplace. No matter who you are, where you're from, how you think, what you believe in, or who you love, we welcome your application. We all come from different backgrounds and walks of life, bringing unique perspectives and experiences.
