What is the role?
As a Structural Designer with the Transit Sector in LEAs Structures Division, you will support the design and rehabilitation of transportation infrastructure projects, including underground transit stations, above-ground station buildings, bridges and culverts, retaining walls, and other transportation structures. Working closely with engineers and project managers, you will translate design concepts into accurate, standards-compliant drawings for use in construction and permitting and assist in other project tasks, such as preparing quantities and cost estimates. Your role is essential in ensuring design clarity, consistency, and alignment with MTO and industry requirements across all project phases.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:
- Assist in the design of routine and complex transportation structures, such as new underground transit stations, bridges and culverts, retaining walls, , other transportation structures such as high mast pole and overhead sign supports, and the rehabilitation design of existing structures.
- Assist Senior Engineers and Project Managers with design team coordination, project schedules, and day-to-day project management tasks.
- Assist senior engineering staff with field inspections of existing structures and preparing detailed inspection reports.
- Assist in developing project specifications, quantity take-offs, cost estimates, working day estimates, and project scheduling.
- Prepare technical reports for various phases of design, such as Structural Design Reports and Structural Evaluation Reports.
- Participate in conducting site visits, undertaking research, data collection/field reviews, data summary, and documenting observations to prepare reports relating to existing and new structures.
- Liaise with other project discipline team members and sub-consultants in coordinating technical aspects of the work under the direction of an Engineer.
- Ensure quality control and quality assurance measures are followed throughout the project.
- Continuously grow professional skills and knowledge through training sessions, seminars, workshops, and involvement in professional associations to stay updated on the latest trends, software, and technology.
- Assisting with managing other related assignments within the scope of the Structures Division, which may include Bridge and Building structures.
The qualifications you need:
- Bachelor of Engineering in Civil/Structural with 1-2 years of experience.
- Co-op experience working in a professional Engineering environment, completing design or construction inspection of transportation structures (such as tunnels, transit structures, bridges, culverts, etc.) is an asset.
- Good knowledge of industry-relevant structural analysis and drafting software (SAP2000, Midas Civil, AutoCAD, MicroStation, MathCAD, etc.) is an asset.
- Familiarity with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6), Canadian Code for Design of Concrete (CSA A23) and Steel (CSA S16) Structures, Ontario Building Code (OBC), Ontario ProvincialStandards and Specifications (OPSS), and MTO manuals and guidelines related to structures (such as the MTO Structural Manual and MTO Structure Rehabilitation Manual).
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with the ability to complete multiple project tasks and meet tight project deadlines when required.
- Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment, working towards common goals and objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to go above and beyond, effectively multitask, and capable of handling changing priorities within a demanding deadline-orientated environment.
- Self-motivation to continuously learn while completing assigned work tasks.
- G license required for travel to GTA work sites and occasional remote locations.
The work arrangement:
LEA operates in a hybrid environment to ensure flexibility, safety, and the well-being of everyone. Periodic attendance at our Markham office is expected to facilitate in-person learning of new tasks with experienced senior staff.
