Position Summary:

Wasauksing First Nation is accepting applications for a Cook. Responsible for prepping and ensuring safe storage of differing meals and snacks for the various Health Prevention and Promotion Programming. This job includes: stocking and maintenance of kitchen pantry, fridge and freezers with prepared foods; providing for the programming staff a list of required fresh produce; condiments; perishables; cleaning supplies and ensuring organization of the kitchen. Assist with the day of serving meals to be taken within/outside the Health Kitchen serving the meals and clean-up as required for each separate event as required in or out of the Health Department. This position requires that the individual possesses excellent hygienic practices; skills and the ability to work quickly and efficiently within all assigned kitchen/prep areas. Responsible for overall food preparation for and preparing meals for individual(s) with allergies and dietary restrictions as indicated by the dietetic and nursing staff. Must be adaptable to menu changes and be able to meet meal schedules. Ensures safe food preparations and proper sanitation methods are used and maintains a safe kitchen/pantry area.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Planning, preparation, delivery and sometimes serving of wholesome and nutritious foods prepared according to the Health Regulations, and Canadas Food Guide in consultation with the dietitian; nursing staff and programming staff.
  • Review with the DOH or other supervisory staff, planning and evolving timetable for some foods that can be prepared and frozen in advance.
  • Review with prevention and promotion staff, an evolving three month menu rotation, utilizing the program plans for prepared foods. Adherence to allergy/diet restrictions of age groups across the lifespan and ensuring that all preparation is labelled containing differing allergens and contents.
  • Responsible for the listing of a shopping list of supplies for local and out of town purchasing of food and supplies needed to complete food preparation/freezing and preserving are adhered to.
  • Ensuring that the cleaning schedule on-going and after preparation is exceeding all cleaning standards and remains well maintained.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • To advise the Director of Health; programming staff of the necessity of minor maintenance; repair or replacement.
  • Participate in all appropriate/delegated departmental trainings and public health training, workshops and meetings.

Education & Experience:
Current Food Handler Safety Certification
Experience in the food industry is considered an asset
Previous experience in food preparation/serving (small-large events)
Ability to speak, read and understand Anishnaabemowin (Ojibway Language) is an asset

Other Requirements:
Provide a current CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Check
Valid Driver's License and reliable personal vehicle
This position requires the individual to work with various families, youth and children. To protect children, youth and vulnerable persons, Wasauksing First Nation requires the individual to provide a vulnerable sector. Or criminal record check
Prior experience working with children an asset
First Aid, CPR qualifications Must possess a current Drivers License and dependable vehicle.
