Salary: 26 per hour

The Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta, operating as Africa Centre, is the largest pan African organization in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community.

We are currently seeking a Bookkeeper & Accounts Assistant to contribute to the success of the overall organization. The person in this position will primarily be responsible for assisting the Finance department with the following tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review, record and process payments received and approved through Monday.com through Sage System. While ensuring accuracy, completely and that requested amounts match the backups provided.
  • Review & print receipt and other back-up information for requisitions in Monday.com and ensure they are properly filed in the appropriate payables cabinet and other accounting documents.
  • Count and record in the sage system Daycare monthly fees and government subsidy received.
  • Deposit cash and cheques in the bank. Ensure that the deposit slips are photocopied, back up information attached and filed in the statements binder.
  • Make cheques e.g., for Vendors, CRA and Rent and have them signed by relevant personnel. Ensure seamless distribution of cheques once signed.
  • Monthly bank statements reconciliation and reconciling finance accounts and direct debits.
  • Support in providing documents requested by program staff, auditors and directors. Provide other support during various program audits.
  • Review and process credit card expenses in the sage system. Ensure all the receipts are attached and properly filed. Regularly monitor and advise when credit card payment is required.
  • Support with posting payroll journal entries on the sage system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • At least a Diploma or BSc in Accounting, bookkeeping, finance or similar fields.
  • Hands-on accounting experience.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft office including excel.
  • Knowledge of sage or similar accounting software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team player and ability to adapt and work in a diverse teamwork environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned duties and learn fast.
  • Passionate about making an impact in the black community.
