YW Calgary works to provide preventive and restorative services to women and their families to help them thrive. Our mission is to intervene, empower and lead where people need us most. Reporting to the child support and family access services supervisor, the cook is responsible for planning, preparing, cooking, and serving healthy, delicious, and nutritious meals to ensure high quality service and experience for shelter residents and their children. The cook helps to ensure the kitchen is organized, operating efficiently and that proper food storage, handling and sanitation procedures are followed. The cook understands that proper nutrition is an important part of a holistic approach to supporting trauma recovery and building resiliency so women and their families can thrive in a safe and equitable community.

This is a part-time position working 30 hours per week, Friday through Monday. The cook will work in a commercial kitchen environment with exposure to temperature changes and must be able to stand for long periods and perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting, and carrying.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Preparing meals from a preapproved menu that follows the Canada Food Guide, use fresh food, and produce, and suits a wide variety of tastes.
• Uses creativity to recommend ideas and menus for special themes, or seasonal dishes.
• Adjust meals to consider the varying cultural and health needs of current shelter residents i.e., Halal, vegetarian, gluten free, et cetera. • Liaise with women's support workers to determine specific dietary needs for current shelter residents.
• Assist cooks with food preparation, packaging food for daily delivery, temperature monitoring, washing dishes, and maintaining kitchen and eating area in an orderly and sanitary condition in accordance with Alberta Health and organizational standards.
• Works with a team of cooks during the week to make healthy meals on weekdays and with a co-cook on the weekends
• Organize food stock and ensure that all food items are covered and labelled appropriately.
• Monitor preparation and cooking areas to ensure maintenance and safety and working order of all equipment, appliances and supplies.
• Participate in monthly staff meetings and professional development opportunities related to food services and best practice.


WHAT YOU'LL BRING
• A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
• Minimum of 2 years professional cooking experience; combination of work experience and education will be considered.
• Previous cooking experience, preferably in a shelter or crisis setting.
• Food Safe or Food Handling certification
• Working experience of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training is an asset.
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite is an asset.
• Ability to work under pressure and with deadlines.
• You are diligent, dependable, and personable – you get along with your co-workers, you have engaging interpersonal skills and you communicate effectively and transparently with others.
• You approach your work and others through the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
• Ability to lift, push, pull up to 50 pounds and tolerate noise and heat in a kitchen environment.
