Role and responsibilities
We are looking for a Junior Accountant to support our senior accounting personnel in our growing business.
The ideal candidate has a positive attitude and is comfortable working with numbers, pays attention to detail, and is motivated to maintain organized accounting databases. The Junior Accountant is expected to:
- Maintain the books for Canadian Shield Capital and special purpose entities, ensuring compliance with company policies and proper documentation, including making original journal entries for all activities, such as accruals, prepayments, and other adjustments
- Prepare the ledger and monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, partners' capital statements, and cash flow statements for each entity in our group of companies and partnerships
- Create simple financial reports and summaries, such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, and due to shareholder reports
- Assist the senior accounting personnel with annual tax returns
- Prepare annual HST returns for special purpose vehicles
- Prepare regular investor distributions calculations for special purpose vehicles
- Maintain master list of all investor capital and prepare annual net book value reports
- Maintain a record of employee loans, prepare loan statements, and track related taxable benefits
- Prepare invoices and statements of account along with supporting documents
- Prepare annual shared cost reconciliation for office expenses
- Prepare monthly credit card, bank, and other account reconciliations to ensure that all transactions are accurately recorded in the accounting system
- Assist Office Manager with expense report preparation and entry into accounting system
- Prepare payments, monitor bank accounts, and prepare forecast statements
- Scan and file all mail and hard documents
- Assist senior accounting personnel and the deal team, as needed
Skills and experience
Role-specific requirements are:
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn and take on new challenges
- Good communication skills
- Strong analytical skills with an eye for detail and accuracy
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles and procedures
- Completed college diploma in business administration, accounting, or similar
- Some relevant bookkeeping experience
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects, prioritize, and organize workload
- Experienced with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Experience with other accounting and fund management software considered and asset
