Job description

A Service Sprinkler Fitter is responsible for the inspections, service, repair, and preventative maintenance of installed fire protection systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, and suppression systems, as well as fire pumps, backflows, and hydrant devices.

Task & Responsibilities:

Inspections

  • Inspect fire protection systems throughout different facilities to ensure they are free of damage/leaks and ensure they provide adequate protection for the hazard level.
  • Provide detailed description of deficiencies found with full solutions and material lists.
  • Testing of these systems requires a comprehensive knowledge of how they operate and the purpose and function of all system components. Inspectors should be well versed in troubleshooting issues while on site to ensure the proper repairs are suggested and issues that come up during testing are quickly and properly resolved to limit downtime.
  • navigating on site issues and managing their time efficiently while ensuring a thorough inspection.
  • A strong understanding of the relevant fire codes is necessary to ensure the inspections are being completed as required by customers, their insurance providers and the AHJ.

Wet Systems

  • Weekly, Monthly, Bi-Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, Annual
  • Testing of control valves, low pressure switches, automatic pressure switches, flow switches, main drains/water supply, etc.
  • Inspecting alarm valves, trim, piping, hangers, sprinkler heads, FDCs, etc.

Dry Systems

  • Weekly, Monthly, Bi-Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, Annual
  • Draining Drum Drips, Testing/Resetting Accelerators, Resetting Dry Valves, Full & Partial Trips
  • Inspecting compressors and identifying maintenance requirements

Preaction/Deluge Systems

  • Weekly, Monthly, Bi-Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, Annual
  • Draining Drum Drips, Full/Partial Trips, Testing function of solenoids, pneumatic actuators and other releasing devices.
  • Ensuring proper sequencing of FA and Preaction Devices.
  • Inspecting compressors and identifying maintenance requirements
  • Resetting valves after testing.

Fire Pumps/Standpipe

  • Weekly Diesel, Monthly Electric-confirming proper operation of controller and safety features, confirming proper pressures on gauges, proper fluid levels in diesel driver, packing in good condition/adjusted as necessary, confirming proper operation of main relief and circulation relief.
  • Annual for Electric/Diesel-complete annual performance test with flow meter or testing equipment.
  • Recording reading from the fire pump and the associated driver.
  • Where required adjusting relief valves to ensure proper flow readings.
  • Basic diagnosis of issues with pump performance or driver issues.
  • Ensuring pump installation meets current requirements and making proper recommendations to meet current standards when required. Ie.Test Headers, Piping Arrangements, etc.
  • When required, a standpipe flow test from the most remote hose cabinet is to be performed during the annual inspection. During this test, the fitter is verifying the necessary flow and pressure requirements are being met for the standpipe system.

Deficiencies for all types of systems including minor pump repairs.

  • A service fitter should be comfortable in servicing/repairing all aspects of fire protection equipment.
  • Relocating and adding sprinkler heads
  • Repairing or modifying system piping
  • Repairing or replacing system components
  • Completing internal valve and pipe assessments
  • Hydrostatic testing on FDCs and Backflow Forward Flows
  • Air loss test on dry/preaction systems
  • Troubleshooting issues with proper system operation, providing thorough solutions with material as needed.

Service Work

  • Fitters should be capable of attending a wide range of service calls where it may be necessary to address/diagnose issues with varying components of the system.
  • Identify and provide effective solutions and complete the repairs in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with customers effectively and ensure the customer is receiving valuable quality service.
  • The Service Fitters should be capable of being on call for their designated after-hours time frame. While on call, the fitter is responsible for receiving after hours service calls for their specific region and independently providing the necessary solutions required for various situations.

Qualifications:

  • A member of local 496 in good standing
  • Have 2+ years of service van experience.
  • Clean drivers abstract and valid drivers license.
  • Journeyperson status
  • Follow verbal and written instructions and provide clear and efficient communication
  • Capable of performing physical labour to include carrying and moving equipment and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Majority of work is all above head
  • Able to get Security Clearances is an asset
  • Able to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions such as climbing ladders, scaffolding and high lift equipment, working within ducts, crawl spaces, above ceilings, etc.
  • Approval for additional manpower.
  • Communication regarding CFLS or site-specific safety requirements.
  • Capable and experienced with using mobile devices (iPad/iPhone) for completing reports and deficiencies.
  • On-site installation conflicts.
  • Approval for all human resource related matters (ie. holidays, leave of absence, letter of employment history).
