POSITION
Director of Finance
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Finance acts as the chief financial advisor and an essential member of the Management Team. This role significantly supports the organization's overall success by effectively leading the finance department and playing a key part in operations and strategic growth. The incumbent will oversee a small team of accounting professionals.
Main Responsibilities:
Financial Planning & Operational Analysis
  • Engages with the CEO and other management team members in long-term strategic planning and new business development activities.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operating budgets and financial forecasts;
  • Analyzing profitability, pricing, sales results, and the company's actual financial performance against business plans, conducting root cause analysis on any variances to budget, and holding the management team accountable for these.
  • Managing the ongoing development of budgeting, forecasting, and modelling tools while leveraging insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Performing value-added ad-hoc analyses that support decision-making related to technology investments, pricing, and contract negotiations, among other things.
  • Evaluating and monitoring whether strategies are achieving their intended impact, and collaborating with relevant business partners to develop remedial action plans or alternative approaches to enhance the strategy's effectiveness, as needed.
Accounting & Financial Reporting
  • Managing all Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable activities and transactions, including payroll and benefits administration.
  • Managing all aspects of the financial close process, including financial statement preparation as well as KPIs and metrics.
  • Analyzing financial statements, identifying key operating issues, and addressing them accordingly.
  • Preparing and presenting strategic monthly reporting packages for management and the board, including business insights.
  • Monitoring banking activity and identifying opportunities to increase cash flow and capitalizing on them.
  • Facilitating compliance with provincial and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Identifying opportunities to maximize the company's international business.

Other Key Duties
  • Leading a small team of finance and accounting professionals to ensure effective practices and provide opportunities for development and coaching for performance.
  • Identifying and addressing opportunities to streamline financial processes using the company's ERP system.
  • Establishing controls and guidelines for inventory optimisation (including inventory turns and ageing) and holding the relevant functional leaders accountable.
  • Creating and maintaining financial policies and procedures for the company.
  • Collecting and providing information for audit inquiries and giving assistance to auditors.
  • Handling all real estate and insurance-related tasks.
  • Performing other ad hoc duties, as required.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in accounting, business or commerce; CA/CPA designation is also required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of financial leadership experience, preferably within a product-based company.
  • Proven system thinking and the ability to use a financial system similar to NetSuite.
  • Strong leadership abilities, including coaching, developing, and mentoring staff.
  • Proven financial management and modelling expertise and ability to analyze and interpret financial results, to be presented to a Board.
  • Entrepreneurially minded with a strong understanding of operations, providing a business perspective on complex financial and operational issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present complex technical issues and concepts in a business-friendly manner to various audiences.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal and collaboration skills and adapts their communication style to various personalities, responding tactfully.
  • Exceptional analytical skills to identify and resolve critical issues with suitable solutions and recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deliverables in a deadline-driven environment and adapt to frequently changing priorities.
