Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Heavy Equipment Operator/Assistant will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment as well as assist in overseeing daily operations, ensuring work is completed safety, on time and according to job specifications. This job will work closely with the Director of Operations and assist with managing personnel, coordinating tasks, and communicating effective with management as well as other team members.

The Heavy Equipment Operator/Assistant will support various municipal projects, including road maintenance, utilities, construction, recreation duties for the Town of Esterhazy. They will operate equipment but not be limited to graders, excavators, loaders, and packers. They will maintain and repair infrastructure at the Town of Esterhazy and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND SKILLS:

  • Highschool diploma or GED
  • Minimum 7 years experience in operating heavy equipment, which includes graders, wheel loaders, dozers, packers, haul trucks and excavators in a municipal environment. Completion of relevant training and certifications for operating heavy equipment.
  • Proven experience in previous supervisory or leadership role.
  • Valid Class 5 license from the Province of Saskatchewan as well as a clean drivers abstract.
  • Experience in maintaining public works/recreation, utility and municipal infrastructure and facilities on a daily basis would be preferred.
  • OSHA certification or willingness to obtain. Positive, proactive attitude toward safety, utilizing proper Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE").
  • Must adhere to all safety protocols and proper procedures.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to follow instructions.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and conflict resolutions skills while having ability to adapt to high pressure situations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, or independently and/or part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) for interaction and reporting, with both internal and external stakeholders, the community, as well as management.
  • Committed to personal accountability with the ability to maintain a high standard of conduct.
  • Self-directed individual with excellent attention to detail, time management skills and basic computer skills.
  • Respectful, honest and trustworthy.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Safely operate heavy equipment including but not limited to backhoes, loaders, excavators, packers, graders, tractors, trucks, and bulldozers.
    • Perform digging, grading, trenching, and material handling as needed.
    • Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
    • Assist with physical labor tasks such as site prep, cleanup, and material handling when not operating equipment
  • Support the Director, Operations or his designate in supervising and coordinating the daily work of crew members.
    • Ensure team compliance with job specifications, project plans, and safety standards.
    • Help manage site logistics, including delivery of materials and allocation of equipment.
    • Provide on-site direction and problem-solving/conflict resolution support.
    • Monitor team productivity and assist with reporting progress to management as required.
    • Serve as a liaison between crew members and upper management to relay updates or concerns.
    • Mentor less experienced crew members when necessary.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining job sites, including site clearing, excavation, grading, and material handling.
  • Assist and maintain public works/recreation, utility and municipal infrastructure and building assets as required.
  • Assist with operations at municipal landfill as required.
  • Install and maintain road signs (ex. regulatory, warning, information), post detours and road closures during routine maintenance or emergencies.
  • Ensure daily log books are completed, reporting is to be accurate and comprehensive in detail.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks and trailers.
  • Assist operators and crew members with manual labor tasks.
  • Perform daily safety checks and routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safety procedures on and around equipment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, lead by example, and report (in writing) any hazards or incidents immediately.
  • Attend to standby/callouts on a rotating basis or as required.
  • Interpret project plans or instructions from supervisors to execute job tasks efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate equipment and work logs as required.
