JOB SUMMARY

The DCSA Media Hub is an exciting new space on the Durham College Campus which includes the latest in broadcast technology. It includes creative spaces for Durham College Students as well as our Riot Radio Studio.

Riot Radio (RR) combines television-style production with traditional broadcast radio content. The goal of RR is to include the best of both mediums (TV & Radio), providing students with a unique and creative outlet. RR is also one of the first visual radio stations in North America. The station operates within the academic year and strives to broadcast 24/7 with live broadcasts on-air Monday to Friday. Daily programming begins at 9AM; Durham College , who volunteer with RR each semester, produce almost all on-air content.

The main role of the Broadcast Technician is to monitor and operate all in-studio broadcasts while assisting and directing student volunteers. Part of the role includes supporting assistant technicians, who work directly with a broadcast technician. The ideal candidate must possess a positive attitude and foster a learning environment that is welcoming to all students, free of prejudice. The candidate must be detail oriented and possess the ability to supervise, instruct, and support student volunteers. Is it critical that studio operations and broadcasts run smoothly, continuously, and programs run uninterrupted without error. Programming is expected to run uninterrupted with transitions between programs following procedure and programs are not be affected by shift changes. An ideal candidate will successfully operate both audio and video equipment as well as understand the importance of each medium while merging the two successfully. All level one Broadcast Technicians must have experience with video editing, production, and digital content creation. Riot Radio primarily uses Adobe software for video production and commonly utilizes Avid software for audio production. Please note: shifts may rotate or be adjusted slightly to accommodate workflow and ensure uninterrupted programming; notice of shift changes or disruptions will be provided in a timely manner.

The Broadcast Technician may be required to direct both the on-air talent and assistant technicians. Training will be provided in relation to the Media Hubs operational procedures and standards. Students volunteer as On-air Hosts or Assistant Technicians. The Broadcast Technician, with some assistance of the Media Hub team and Media Hub Manager, will recruit, train, and develop new student volunteers. It is the goal of the Broadcast Technician to develop new volunteers successfully so they may continue each semester, meeting the Media Hubs broadcast standards and quality programming.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:


  • Daily studio operation: equipment restarts, media & content management, and live broadcasting;

  • Supervise & train volunteer Assistant Technicians:

  • Supervise & direct on-air talent during live broadcasts with the Broadcast Coordinator

  • Assist with equipment, software and programming issues

  • Keep assistant technician training files up to date and accurate

  • Manage video content from creation to export;

  • Maintain video library and ensure accuracy on all published content;

  • Recording, managing, and maintaining the broadcast library as well as archiving;

  • Facilitate special technical requests as needed;

  • Provide students with constructive feedback according to Media Hub programming standards;

  • Assist fellow Staff with supporting all volunteers;

  • maintain detailed assistant technician volunteer contact lists
    Provide customer service, ensuring a quality service to students of Durham College;

  • Represent the Media Hub Riot Radio brand, and the Employer;

  • Additional tasks assigned by the Employer's Representative as needed, within reason
    and considering workload.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written;

  • Superb organizational skills, time management and punctuality;

  • Effective and proven teaching skills the ability to instruct students from all academic levels while being positive and supportive;

  • Embraces a diverse and positive work environment Positive Space (accepting of all persons)

  • Strong conflict resolution skills and good interpersonal skills are required;

  • Demonstrates exceptional problem-solving skills in Audio Video technology and computer systems;

  • Must effectively communicate with others and have genuine concern for student success;

  • Minimum 2 5? years experience in audio, video, and TV/radio broadcast is required;

  • Experience in audio, video, or broadcast are required

  • Minimum 1-year volunteer experience with Riot Radio, strongly preferred;

  • Experience with student services or working directly with students; and

  • Ability to use TriCaster, USTREAM, and Apple (Mac) operating systems is an asset.

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree is preferred; and

  • Preference will be given to Durham College Alumni.
