Our client, a mid-sized growing construction company, is seeking a Controller to join their team in Calgary. This role is responsible for overseeing financial operations, strategic planning, and internal controls while ensuring compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate has a strong background in finance and accounting within construction or O&G, and thrives in a leadership role that balances hands-on work with high-level financial strategy.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting to drive strategic decision-making.
- Oversee cost accounting, financial modeling, and variance analysis to improve profitability.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP/IFRS, tax regulations, and internal controls.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations and financial statements.
- Partner with senior leadership to optimize financial performance and operational efficiency.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to accounting staff.
- Liaise with external auditors, tax professionals, and financial institutions.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and implement best practices in financial management.
Must-Have Qualifications
- CPA designation.
- 7+ years of accounting and finance experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within construction.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards (GAAP/IFRS) and cost accounting.
- Experience with ERP systems and advanced proficiency in Excel.
- Strategic mindset with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience with Oracle
- Exposure to capital project accounting or inventory costing.
- Background in process automation or financial system upgrades.
