POSITION OVERVIEW
Working collaboratively with other program team members and volunteers, the Peer Support Worker engages women accessing the Centre in a non-judgmental and strengths-based manner. The Peer Support Worker connects women with information, referrals, and support to meet a variety of needs, questions, and concerns. Using effective communication skills, the Peer Support Worker creates a safe and trauma-informed environment that supports resilience, empowerment, and meaningful connection with others. This position nurtures community-building in all aspects of their work.

KEY DUTIES

  • Support women who visit the Centre through the provision of information, referrals, and support.
  • Provide trauma-focused, culturally appropriate, and strengths-focused support.
  • Support, motivate, and coach Centre volunteers, ensuring that they have the information they need to speak with confidence about community resources and the Centre.
  • Ensure daily and weekly statistics are collected and documented in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Contribute towards a culture of psychological safety.
  • Build effective relationships with clients, volunteers, and supporters of the Centre.
  • Participate in activities related to equity, diversity, and inclusion as well as Truth and Reconciliation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or undergraduate degree in Social Work. A combination of experience and education in a related area will be considered.
  • Registration and membership in good standing with a regulatory body (if appropriate).
  • 2+ years of experience working in a drop-in or community-based setting.
  • Basic assessment, safety planning, and crisis management skills.
  • Working knowledge of community resources.
  • The ability to remain calm in fast-paced environments.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Womens Centre is a storefront community center operating in an open environment. This role will require attendance and participation in off-site meetings and events in the community. This position requires some evening work.
