Position Title: HCS JANITOR

Reports to: HCS Principal

Job Overview

Reporting to the HCS Principal, the HCS Janitor is responsible for maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and sanitation at the Haisla Community School, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and visitors.

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Sweep all floors, entrance ways, and stairs.
  • Disinfect tables, desks, and chairs.
  • Vacuum rugs.
  • Mop all floors, including offices.
  • Clean and service all washrooms daily.
  • Wipe and sanitize all touch points daily, including countertops, door handles, light switches, sinks, and taps.
  • Clean whiteboards and cubby areas in classrooms.
  • Provide cleaning services during and after community events to ensure venue is returned to its original state.
  • Clean gymnasium floor and bleachers.
  • As time permits, dust, wash walls, and windows.
  • Remove and properly dispose of waste from all areas. Wash garbage cans weekly.
  • Properly dispose of recycling.
  • Maintain the school yard and playground.
  • Arrange for timely removal of snow from the parking lot and school entrances.
  • Identify and report any damages, possible repairs, or maintenance needs.
  • Determine and maintain the supply and materials inventory.
  • Liaise with outside contractors such as plumbers, electricians, and carpenters.
  • Respond promptly to any safety hazards or concerns within the facilities.
  • Follow all health and safety regulations, including the proper handling and storage of cleaning utensils, as well as the Haisla Nation Council's policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or equivalent.
  • Building Maintenance Certificate preferred.
  • First Aid, Level 1 preferred.
  • Previous experience in janitorial or custodial work an asset.
  • Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize safe work practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction as well as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks, including ability to lift heavy objects as needed.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Valid BC driver's license and own vehicle is an asset.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range: $31.20/hr

Position Type: Full-time
