Assist in preparation and setting up displays for the interpretive centre using materials provided by the Southwest Nova Biosphere Region Association and incorporating an interactive component for those who wish to learn through hands-on and visual stimulation.

• Act as a welcomer and interpreter for visitors to the Interpretive Centre and promote an understanding of the historical, cultural, environmental and economic characteristics of the area with an emphasis on the qualities that distinguish it as a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve. This would involve interacting with visitors to provide information on the displays and the science behind the displays.

• Maintain a computer at the interpretive centre that can hold additional information not available for display on site.

• Verifying and update features in the SNBRA area presented in the Map App. Some digital information management expertise would be useful for an employee in this context

• Conduct research and provide guidance using available computer resources provided to promote the region with visitors and assist in making connections among the various biosphere reserve components of the region.

• Maintain the area in a neat and tidy condition that is inviting to the public.

•Become knowledgeable of the region, the Interactive Science Atlas and the Biosphere Region Map App so that they can be shared and interpreted for visitors to the centre.

• Assist in updating existing online regional promotional material that may be out of date by coordinating with regional tourism information offices.

• Supervise visitors at the Interpretive Centre,inviting each one to sign a guest log and maintain an accurate count of the number of visitors at the site.

• Complete and assist with completion of routine maintenance such as interior cleaning, picking up any litter,
painting, maintaining garden displays at the interpretive centre, etc.

• Seek and identify opportunities and strategies to market tourism experiences in the Southwest Nova Biosphere Region.

Position Summary

The Southwest Nova Biosphere Region Association is seeking a motivated and engaging individual to support the operations of our Interpretive Centre. This position focuses on educating and welcoming visitors, promoting the unique characteristics of the UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, and maintaining the Centre as an inviting and educational space.

Key Responsibilities

Visitor Engagement & Interpretation

  • Greet and welcome all visitors to the Interpretive Centre.

  • Act as a guide and interpreter, sharing information on the area's historical, cultural, environmental, and economic significance.

  • Explain the science behind displays and biosphere reserve features through interactive and hands-on learning components.

  • Encourage visitors to sign a guest log and keep an accurate count of all Centre guests.

Exhibit & Display Management

  • Assist in setting up and maintaining engaging displays using materials provided by SNBRA.

  • Incorporate visual and interactive elements to enhance visitor experience.

  • Ensure all exhibits are up-to-date, clean, and in excellent condition.

Digital Information & Research

  • Maintain a Centre-based computer containing extended educational content.

  • Support the SNBRA Map App by verifying features and updating digital content.

  • Utilize available online tools and research resources to guide visitors and promote regional biosphere assets.

  • Become proficient with the Interactive Science Atlas and Biosphere Reserve Map App to effectively share these resources with visitors.

Centre Maintenance & Upkeep

  • Maintain the Centre's cleanliness and organization, including routine cleaning and litter collection.

  • Support light maintenance duties such as painting and upkeep of garden displays.

Regional Promotion & Tourism Support

  • Coordinate with local tourism offices to update promotional materials and ensure accuracy of regional information.

  • Help identify opportunities to market and enhance tourism experiences within the Southwest Nova Biosphere Region.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong communication and public engagement skills.

  • Interest in environmental education, tourism, or heritage interpretation.

  • Comfortable using computers and managing digital content (experience with online maps or content management is a plus).

  • Ability to work independently and responsibly with minimal supervision.

  • Passion for sustainability, community development, and local history.

Additional Information

  • This position may be funded under the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria as outlined by the program.

  • Training will be provided on the biosphere region and digital tools.
