JOB SUMMARY
The Recreation Therapist reports to the Recreation Manager. The Recreation Therapist supervises the Recreation Therapy Assistants and is responsible for: therapeutic recreation assessments, therapeutic recreation intervention plans, planning, developing, and implementing and evaluating therapeutic programs for our residents, and facilitating family conferences. As well the Volunteer program you will be responsible for coordinating the volunteer program including interviewing potential volunteers, development, and placement of volunteer programs, working within the interdisciplinary team for identification for volunteer needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working with those requiring mental health/dementia support.

POSITION
This is a temporary full-time position, Monday-Friday (Maternity leave) approximately until December 2025 or until the return of the incumbent

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for supervising and leading Recreation Therapy Assistants
  • Offers staff mentoring, education, attendance management and/or discipline as required up to and including termination with support of Recreation Manager.
  • Facilitates staff participation and engagement in problem solving and develops a positive work environment.
  • Implements/ facilitates and monitors recreation programs to meet physical, emotional, social, spiritual, cognitive needs of each resident.
  • Utilize the Therapeutic Recreation Standards of practice to ensure holistic care in accordance with PPSL care standards.
  • Develops specifically the Recreation component in the Care Plans to meet the needs of the residents, based on assessment, patient interests and goals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize cultural/ religious diversity of residents, staff, families, and volunteers.
  • Participate in multi-interdisciplinary team meetings. Attend and participate in Resident/ Family Case Conferences.
  • Attends monthly Care Meetings and participates in setting goals for individual Residents.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive volunteer program that supports the needs of the residents, families, staff, and volunteers.
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team in identification of and response to resident, family, staff, and volunteers needs.
  • Complete the PPSL recreation audits and surveys related to volunteer service quality assurance program, Recreation Programs and Spiritual Care.
  • Responsible for Recreation Therapy Assessments to be completed in 6 weeks, yearly or when pertinent changes occur.
  • Facilitate weekly Functional Intervention meetings with Recreation therapy assistants and report monthly results to Recreation Manager.
  • Develops and plans Recreation Program Calendars for the assigned population at VM and SP.
  • Responsible for charting pertinent information on a resident Multidisciplinary Notes.
  • Responsible for the Community Resource Centre and Information Boards to have pertinent information and resources our various population needs.
  • Responsible that Recreation staff /Volunteers to adhere to safe work procedures and that residents are safe in their environment.
  • Assist in developing policy and procedures for the recreation department
  • Maintains good relations with the community through participation in/ and development of community-based program, including contact with community agencies.
  • Purchase supplies needed by the Recreation Department weekly/monthly. Petty Cash will be supplied and managed by the Recreation Manager.
  • Develops implements, facilitates, and evaluates Recreation participation programs, Leisure education and Functional intervention.
  • Ensures poster requests and food requisitions are complete and submitted on time.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or Diploma in accredited school for Recreation
  • Current registration in Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA)
  • Proficient computer skills in Outlook, Excel and Word
  • 2-3 years experience working with mental health/ Alzheimer/ dementia and physical disabilities.
  • Experience developing and facilitating a volunteer program
  • Organized, highly motivated, results orientated with accuracy in tasks
  • Positive attitude with strong personal work ethic
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills in the English language
  • Experience in conflict resolution
  • Clear criminal record security clearance with vulnerable Sector included (no more than 6 months old)
  • Must be physically fit, able to be on your feet for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work independently, and as part of the interdisciplinary team

PHYSICAL DEMAND
Extensive standing, walking, bending, lifting, and stopping. In an average day the employee spends approximately 5 to 7 1/2 hours walking and standing. Lifts a maximum of 50lbs., frequently lifting and/or carrying of 20lbs. Must be able to manage stressful work situations with dexterity.
