We are looking for two (2) post-secondary placement students to join our Recovery West Team! The placement students will promote mental health recovery by supporting group programming and direct client work in a peer-focused setting. Recovery West provides awelcoming space for adults living with mental illness and provides opportunities that support mental wellness and recovery.


The placements are unpaid and will be up to 4 months long and for students looking to complete preferably 300 or more placement hours, beginning in Fall 2025. This placement has alternating shifts between 8:30AM to 4:30PM and 11:00AM to 7:00 PM.

Status: Unpaid Post-Secondary Student Placement


Location: 601- 7700 Hurontario St., Brampton. Due to the nature of this program, this role is on-site and/or community based.

What You Will Do:

  • Support the creation, coordination, and delivery of psychoeducational, therapeutic, and social-recreational groups for clients at Recovery West, community locations, and in virtual settings
  • Conduct all groups in accordance with program policy
  • Support orientation of new members to the program
  • Assist clients to monitor their own mental health and initiate interventions that promote wellness
  • Provide education on addiction and mental health, to clients and their families or other supports
  • Consult, advocate and liaise with community resources and agencies to assist clients in achieving their goals
  • Complete any mandatory trainings and other trainings as required
  • Manage information for program evaluation; assist with data collection and record-keeping as required
  • Attend team and interagency meetings if requested and travel to external sites from time to time (example: visiting hospital sites with Transitional Peer Support Worker)

What You Need to Join Our Team:

  • Current university or college student in social work/social services or equivalent; Students with lived experience of mental health issues and/or addictions and an interest in peer support work are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Recovery Principles
  • Ability to connect and engage with clients with mental illness
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to approach, listen, build trust, and communicate across diverse cultures and intersectionality. Willingness to continually improve understanding around cultural competence
  • Openness to operate from an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, 2SLGBTQ+ affirming and intersectional framework
  • Willingness to learn and apply practical understanding of different elements of diversity, such as gender identity/expression, race/cultural background, religion, sexual orientation, disability, immigration and precarious status, family status, etc.
  • Some evenings required and an ability to travel within Peel Region from time to time
  • Satisfactory vulnerable sector screening
  • Satisfactory references
