The Opportunity:

The Burnaby refinery continuously executes capital projects to ensure the facility keeps up with the latest technologies, to meet new or revised regulations, and to ensure the timely replacement of aging equipment. As a member of the Projects team, the Refinery Project Manager plays an important role throughout the full lifecycle of each assigned project. This position offers a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to lead the planning, execution and integration of capital projects into the Refinery operation. Typical total installed cost (TIC) of assigned projects ranges between $1 million and $35 million but each assignment also depends on the candidate's abilities and the complexity of each project.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Managers are accountable for the outcome of all assigned projects.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary project teams, including cross departmental participants from the Construction, Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Health, Safety, Environmental, and Turnaround teams.
  • Manage projects through all Project Management's Knowledge Areas as defined by PMI, which include the management of project integration, scope, schedule, cost, quality, resources, communication, risk, procurement and stakeholders.
  • Assess the potential overall benefits of projects during the justification phase.
  • Analyze creative, doable alternatives to deliver value through the project scope.
  • Create documents summarizing information supporting projects and rationalizing decisions.
  • Work in conjunction with third party engineering firms to create and validate detailed design, cost estimates and workforce loaded schedules.
  • Regularly communicate project status to the project leadership, and generate monthly project reports for integration into the refinery's portfolio reports, which includes monthly forecasts.
  • Request and manage the creation and changes to purchase orders and contracts.
  • Actively monitor and manage potential changes.
  • Actively review and approve invoices.
  • As a Parkland employee, meet all site-specific training and risk management requirements.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated commitment to personal and process safety.
  • Bachelor of Applied Science or Engineering degree.
  • Eligibility for registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer.
  • 5 to 10 years of related project management experience in an industrial setting or a consulting engineering firm.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective at solving problems and managing concurrent conflicting priorities.
  • Project Management certificate from the Project Management Institute (PMI) would be considered an asset.

We Offer:

  • Our Performance-based Annual Incentive Plan, an annual bonus awarding your performance.
  • A share in our success through the Employee Share Purchase Plan and 100% company matching.
  • A flexible group benefit plan that offers health and dental coverage choices to meet the needs of each unique employee. Inclusive of life and disability insurances, Health Care and Lifestyle Spending options, and a supportive Employee and Family Assistance Program.

  • Discount Programs and Educational Scholarship Programs for family members.
  • A safety focused work environment and ongoing safety training.
