Position Overview:
The Environmental Health and Safety Manager plays a key leadership role in managing and advancing YORK1s Environmental Health & Safety Management System across its operations. This position works closely with operational leaders to ensure compliance, foster a strong safety culture, and provide hands-on support across field-based functions including waste collection, transfer stations, transportation, telecom, and hydrovac services.
The ideal candidate will bring Health and Safety experience from the environmental services, trucking, or construction industries, with a strong understanding of field operations and regulatory requirements within these sectors. This role requires approximately 90% travel across various YORK1 locations in the GTA and Southern Ontario.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure corporate governance & due diligence requirements are adhered to in relation with relevant jurisdictions (OHSA / MTO / NSC / MECP)
- Support COR / ISO 45001 standards that are in place
- Work with / support internal key stakeholders such as Operations, Fleet & Maintenance
- Establish trusted relationships with operations leaders and frontline employees to gain a deep understanding of YORK1s varied business units and safety needs
- Be highly visible across sites, offering boots-on-the-ground support to frontline teams, focusing on coaching, culture building, and real-time hazard mitigation
- Monitor the EHS program effectiveness through auditing and make recommendations as required
- Lead incident investigations and coordinate emergency response activities as required.
- Facilitating all necessary training through various platforms/tools including online & in-person training
- Facilitate, support and document remedial processes as required (disciplines, re-instruction, etc.)
- Actively drive a positive safety culture through consistent engagement, follow-through, and operational partnership
Qualifications & Experience:
- 810 years of progressive experience in Health & Safety, with exposure to multi-site, field-based operations within the environmental services, trucking, or construction industries
- Proven experience with COR and ISO 45001 safety management systems
- Strong knowledge of transportation safety practices,and regulatory frameworks
- Strong knowledge of ECA/MECP/TDG/Reg 347 Requirements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels
- Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, manage competing priorities, and work independently in dynamic environments
- Job requirements are to be in field 90% of the time within GTA/Southern Ontario. Must be comfortable with extensive field travel (~90%) throughout the GTA and Southern Ontario
