The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. This role reports to the Manager, Communications and Public Engagement, and supports the delivery of public information, promotional materials, and digital content that helps connect our community with the programs, projects, and services provided by North Cowichan. Whether it's preparing graphics for a public engagement campaign, helping write content for our website or social media channels, or assisting with the coordination of promotional materials, this position is a great opportunity to gain experience in a fast-paced local government environment.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:

  1. Completion of Grade 12.
  2. post-secondary education or training in communications, graphic design, marketing, or a related field together with a minimum of two (2) years of related experience. An equivalent level of education and experience may be considered.
  3. Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, or Canva.
  4. Familiarity with website content management systems, social media platforms, and digital communication tools.
  5. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  6. Photography and videography skills, including editing and packaging for use on social media and online.
  7. An eye for design and attention to detail.
  8. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  9. Flexible availability, with the ability to work on short notice as required.
  10. Knowledge of local government or community-based communications is an asset.
  11. Experience with public engagement or familiarity with IAP2 best practices is an asset.
  12. Knowledge of email newsletter programs or applications is an asset.

This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website. Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a police information check.
