DIRECTOR OF HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT

Reporting to the Vice President of Construction, the Director of Health, Safety & Environment is responsible for developing and enhancing the safety program to build a unified culture of safety throughout the company. This includes the development and implementation of policies and procedures to standardize practices across job sites, mitigate risk, and comply with local governing bodies and legislation. The successful individual will not only comply with legislation but be at the forefront of influencing safety changes in residential high-rise and wood frame construction. The successful individual will have effective communication and be an influential decision-maker to ensure workers' compliance with health and safety legislation and regulations.
This position is part of the management team and plays an integral part in upholding the company's safety program, culture, and values to both internal and external stakeholders. Located in Kelowna, BC, light travel will be required to local construction sites.
What You'll Do:
Develop and manage the health and safety program, including standard operating procedures, best practices, and policies
Champion training initiatives to mitigate risk, optimize workers' health and safety, and foster a positive health and safety culture
Lead and participate in workplace audits and investigations of safety concerns, incidents, and accidents
Lead a team of safety professionals that includes hiring, performance management, mentoring, and career development
Engage with the leadership team and execute on identified safety measures
Conduct thorough safety audits and risk assessments on a regular basis to proactively identify potential health and safety hazards, and promptly suggest and implement effective mitigation measures to maintain a safe working environment
Establish and cultivate positive relationships with key regulatory bodies to stay informed and compliant with evolving health and safety regulations, and proactively address any regulatory requirements to maintain a safe and compliant work environment
Engage with multiple stakeholders in the business to ensure the safety program is applicable and meets/exceeds the required standards of the function
Ensure our client's maintains its COR status
Ensure our client's WorkSafe BC rebates are maximized
Partner with IT to determine software requirements for tracking, analyzing, and reporting on accidents and incidents.
Provide quarterly safety reports by analyzing data to find trends and identify opportunities for improvement in safety procedures
Develop corporate training initiatives on issues of workplace safety
Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and identify emerging trends in health and safety
Support the safety team with workplace inspections to ensure that equipment, materials, and processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees and trades alike
Additional responsibilities and duties as required
What You'll Have:
15+ years in a safety leadership position
A bachelor's degree/college diploma in occupational health and safety, or a similar discipline
Experience in residential and/or mixed-rise concrete construction is strongly preferred
CRSP designation, or working towards, is preferred
Proven skills in leadership and change management
Extensive knowledge of current industry safety policies and applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to conduct training
Strong leadership skills
Good computer skills and experience using MS Office and safety software
Excellent organizational, time management, and relationship-building skills
Knowledge of construction safety protocols
