OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Divisional Controller, the Accounting Manager is a pivotal member of the Corporate Accounting team within the Finance department. This role is designed for a dynamic, detail-oriented professional with a strong foundation in accounting and financial compliance who thrives in a data-informed and strategic environment. The successful candidate will support financial operations, compliance monitoring, reporting, and performance optimization for recycling-related initiatives. They will also contribute to process automation, tool development, and financial system integration efforts. This position requires an individual who can bridge traditional accounting with modern finance tools and insights. The candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate reporting, regulatory alignment, and financial transparency across programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and support the accounting function through change initiatives, system implementations, and process optimization.
  • Understand, assess and automate existing manual operational processes and present back-on-time savings gained through modernization of business operations and organizational efficiency
  • Manage and streamline full cycle monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes and ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial reporting
  • Work closely with financial accountants to ensure timely completion of periodic deliverables such as general and bank account reconciliations, business-critical analyses, and continuity schedules
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, chart of accounts, accruals, revenue recognition, fixed assets, account relationships, and related accounting concepts
  • Support team collaboration, shared responsibilities, and provide backup in peak times and absences
  • Maintain internal controls, ensure compliance with accounting standards (ASPE/IFRS), and oversee audit preparation and execution.
  • Identify, support, and lead projects aimed at scaling up the way the recycling organization leverages on data, insights, and intelligence.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • CPA designation (or in active pursuit).

Experience

  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience in complex environments, with at least 2+ years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls
  • Experience in using accounting and ERP systems (e.g., Datarails, AWS, SAP, Concur, or equivalent)
  • Strong experience in finding data insights and provide business recommendation to the business.

Knowledge/Competencies/Skills

  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills, with ability to interpret complex data and provide financial recommendations.
  • Good stakeholder management experience. Comfortable presenting and communicating finance concepts in laymans language to various levels and department members of the organization.
  • Excellent communicator with superior written, verbal, presentation, storytelling and interpersonal communication skills
  • High attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management capabilities.
  • Flexibility to manage time and workload to accommodate peak work periods and meet deadlines.

Preferable

  • Experience in the recycling, sustainability, or regulatory compliance sector
  • Exposure to machine learning or statistical modeling in financial contexts.
  • Automation experience is an asset.
  • Agile and sprint development experience is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position work 40 hours per week in a remote home environment with required in-office days approximately once or twice each week.
