Reporting to the Team Lead, the primary role of the Transitional Services Recovery Navigator (TSRN) is to mentor and engage individuals in a process where screening and assessing for substance use disorders can be completed, followed by employing the essential skills of recovery coaching and the SACR Protocol to improve the likelihood of the inmate engaging in further services. The Transitional Services Recovery Navigator will also connect inmates to services and supports, including addiction treatment, mental health, education/training/employment supports, appropriate housing supports, income supports and other supports that enhance recovery capital and reduce criminal and medical recidivism.

Role-specific Accountabilities

  • Through liaisons with Correctional Services Division and primarily with Correctional Service Workers, the TSRN will identify inmates at high risk of having a substance use disorder or being negatively impacted by substance misuse.
  • Engage inmates and perform a standardized substance use disorder assessment over multiple visits.
  • Utilize the SACR Protocol, Motivational Interviewing techniques, and brief forms of psychotherapy to help the inmate determine an optimal treatment plan. The TSRN will leverage their knowledge of services within the Alberta ROSC and the local area to optimize the treatment plan and connect the inmate to necessary services.
  • Utilize a relational model of care that supports members choices on where to begin and what to work on, respecting the inmates vision for their desired recovery outcomes.
  • Provide feedback to inmates on their recovery progress. The TSRN will assist the inmate in identifying strengths and potential roadblocks to their sustained recovery and assist members with identifying and resolving personal and environmental obstacles to recovery.
  • Maintain inmate files and individual member Recovery Continuing Care, Individual Wellness Plans and Recovery Checklists on the RSG approved Electronic Medical Record.
  • Provide inmates with information about the stages of recovery and about the prevalence, pathways, and lifestyle that supports long-term recovery.
  • Provide healthy mentorship, act as a social bridge from the culture of addiction to the culture of recovery.
  • Role model behavioural expectations of conduct, dress, daily work habits, interpersonal communication, positive attitudes, temperament, emotional self-management and adherence to facility rules.
  • Support and foster situations that result in learning experiences that require conflict resolution, problem solving, coping and pro-social decision-making.
  • Support in the Therapeutic Living Units for specific shifts or additional coverage when required.


Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Recovery Coaching program, provided by RSG, or have received certification recognized by RSG and provide evidence of current good standing.
  • Identified work experience in a therapeutic setting, including demonstrated knowledge of problematic substance use and mental health.
  • Front line experience providing crisis intervention and management, outreach services, and community-based support.
  • Experience working with members from diverse backgrounds and different cultural groups.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution, problem solving, and strengths-focused mediation skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience of successfully working with a range of community services.
  • Lived experience addiction and/or mental health recovery would be considered an asset.
  • Identified work experience with incarcerated populations would be considered an asset.
  • Must be able to provide a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector check that allows for employment in a provincial correctional centre with clearance being granted by the Director of Security of the Correctional Centre prior to starting employment and annually thereafter.
