As the Fleet Maintenance Manager your primary accountability is overseeing and performing ongoing maintenance and repairs on all vessels and other equipment in the fleet. Decisions made by you range from routine maintenance to those that have a significant impact on costs, operational efficiencies, customer satisfaction and employee morale. Key Accountabilities
Delegates work through Assistant Mechanical Technical Managers, Senior Chief Engineers and Operators on proactive vessel maintenance programs
Services and maintains marine engines and other heavy-duty equipment including loaders, cranes trucks and other mechanical based systems
Consults on repairs and/or improvements to terminals and other company facilities
Acts as a technical resource for internal engineering workers
May direct the work of mechanical, hydraulic, electronic and electrical maintenance, repair and installation contractors
Data entry and development of the company maintenance program
Ensures orderly, appropriate repairs and modifications are consistent with good working practice, including proper documentation
Purchasing duties; ordering, receiving and inventory control
Responds to equipment emergency situations locally and remotely
Ensures speedy, cost effective and quality response to breakdowns and analyzes reasons for breakdown so as to eliminate them and avoid repeats
Ensures all Federal, Provincial, and corporate regulations and policies are adhered to and takes immediate corrective action where non-compliance is found
Skills and Abilities
Must have a strong mechanical aptitude
Ability to effectively troubleshoot, diagnose malfunctions and resolve equipment breakdowns quickly
Ability to make sound, effective business decisions during times of pressure or stress
Proficient with computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Experience using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System)
Must be a self-starter and work without direct supervision
Able to follow instructions, utilize shop manuals and able to solve problems with limited resources
Possess a strong work ethic, a commitment to excellence and have acute safety awareness
Effective interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy while working with a variety of individuals and groups
Management skills including directing, motivating and assessing performance of small teams
Ability to lift heavy items, climb stairs and enter confined space
Qualifications
Marine Engineer, Red Seal Industrial Mechanic or comparable certifications with a minimum of 5 years' experience in preventative maintenance management
Mechanical Engineering certificate or above an asset
Marine industry experience preferred
Class 1 license and Crane certification an asset
Previous experience in welding or other trades an asset
Clean drivers abstract
Project management experience including bidding and budgeting preferred
Working Conditions
Work is mostly performed onboard inland water vessels, in a ship repair facility and in an office
The worksite is subject to weather impacts and may result in a cold, hot or wet working environment
Work Hours
This position is part of a continuous operation. The incumbent will need the flexibility to be "on call" and available after hours. The schedule may include weekends and/or holidays, as directed by the Geneal Manager. Extended hours may be required without notice. At minimum, work hours are 07:00- 16:00 daily, or equivalent to 45 hours a week based on the needs of the business.
Compensation: This position is non-union and completes work in a unionized environment. You will receive a competitive annual salary, full benefits including contributions to the pension plan and access to a company vehicle.
