TSAG Circuit Rider Trainer

The Circuit Rider Training Program (CRTP) at TSAG delivers essential training and mentorship for First Nations water and wastewater system operators across Alberta. This national program is designed to build capacity and ensure the proper operation, maintenance, and safety of drinking water and wastewater systems in First Nation communities.

Through on-site training and ongoing technical support, Circuit Rider Trainers help operators develop the knowledge and skills needed to operate, service, and maintain vital water and wastewater systems.

This position will service the following First Nations:

Beaver Lake First Nation, Cold Lake First Nation, Frog Lake First Nation, Heart Lake First Nation, Kehewin Cree Nation, Saddle Lake First Nation, and Whitefish Lake First Nation #128.

Candidates will be either from the Edmonton Region and spend 1 week per month in the areas or live within a 2-hour radius of these sites

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education required; C.E.T. or equivalent preferred.
  • Diploma in a related technical field (e.g., water/wastewater technology) is an asset.
  • Minimum Level 2 Certification in all of the following:
    • Water Treatment
    • Water Distribution
    • Wastewater Treatment
    • Wastewater Collection
  • Level 3 certification in water and/or wastewater is considered an asset.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license required.
  • Safety certifications including:
    • WHMIS
    • Confined Space Awareness/Entry
    • CPR and First Aid

Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to independently manage time and schedule.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with an ability to teach and mentor.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and providing technical guidance.
  • Ability to review and provide input on project feasibility and system commissioning.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet-based communication tools.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver hands-on training, mentorship, and technical assistance to First Nations water/wastewater operators.
  • Support operators in achieving regulatory compliance with ISC protocols, Health Canada Guidelines, and federal wastewater regulations.
  • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work plans.
  • Guide operators in routine maintenance, repairs, sampling, testing, and record-keeping.
  • Provide input on feasibility studies, system designs, and commissioning activities.
  • Develop site-specific training and certification plans to support operator advancement.
  • Identify and support health & safety training needs of operators.
  • Assist CRT Trouble-shooters in implementing Maintenance Management Plans (MMPs) and Emergency Response Plans (ERPs).
  • Provide emergency response support as required.
  • Maintain up-to-date site contacts and submit Site Visit Reports (SVRs) and Workplans.
  • Support community-based water teams (CBWTs) in addressing Drinking Water Advisories.
  • Assist with annual API and E-ACRS inspections.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot s::can monitoring units as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Workload Expectations:

  • Minimum of one site visit per month for each site with non-certified operators.
  • Minimum of one site visit per quarter for each site with two fully certified operators.
  • Respond to emergency calls requiring CRT services.
