Position: Business Agent - Residuals

Start Date: As soon as possible.

Duration of Appointment: Full Time, Regular

Salary: $111,155.54. Business Agent Residuals rate as per Appendix A of the UBCP/ACTRA and Unifor Local 3000 Collective Agreement.

SUMMARY

The Union of British Columbia Performers (UBCP/ACTRA) is an autonomous branch of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) the national organization of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada. ACTRA represents the interests of 28,000 members across Canada.

UBCP/ACTRA is seeking a Business Agent - Residuals to join our team.

This position requires a strong understanding of residuals collection and distribution, demonstrated experience related to preparing claims for legal action, arbitration or grievance, along with expert knowledge of the film and television industry and the residuals rights of UBCP/ACTRA members as outlined in the BC Master Production Agreement and BC Animation Agreement.

The successful candidate must be able to communicate clearly, negotiate, listen, mitigate conflict, build alliances, and achieve desired results using strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills. They will be expected to develop and maintain strong relationships with industry and residuals personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists Branch and National management with all facets of the collection of fees outstanding to Performers by advancing such claims with producers or distributors. Included in these fees would be unpaid royalties/residual fees, administration fees, insurance and retirement contributions, etc.
  • Coordinates all activities of the Residuals and Use Fee Administrators and Assistant Stewards Residuals, in order to maintain department.
  • Develops, plans and implements film and television residual and royaltys collection systems.
  • Provides the studios and larger companies with a comprehensive summary of overall Use Fee reporting obligations and/or discrepancies to ensure compliance and provides follow-up, as required.
  • Participates in committee meetings or bargaining, as required.
  • Maintains supportive relations and communications with other union and industry partners to promote the goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Prepares claims for legal action, arbitration or grievance when other methods of collection have failed.
  • Liaises with computer programmers on database issues for residuals.
  • Liaises with ACTRA PRS and SAG AFTRA on joint residuals issues.
  • Liaises with Director of Finance with regard to tax issues involving collection of residuals.
  • Works in cooperation with the National Council of ACTRA, Branch staff and other performer and professional unions as required.
  • Attends membership meetings, as required.
  • Other related duties and projects generally considered to be within the job category.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree or post-secondary formal training in law, finance, business administration or a relevant discipline with a minimum of four (4) years of related experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Experience working in a member-based and/or customer service-oriented environment.
  • Experience and understanding of residuals collection and distribution.
  • Experience with enforcing collective agreements.
  • Film industry knowledge would be considered an asset.

  • Comfortable with pursing grievances and legal challenges when required.
  • Comfortable with debt collection and asking for payments.
  • Excellent accounting skills which include use of calculations and formulas.
  • Ability to understand and interpret the BC Master Agreement and BC Animation Agreement.
  • Ability to present detailed and comprehensive verbal and/or written reports on complex issues.

HOURS OF WORK: 5 days per week (35 hours). Regular office hours M-F 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Eligible for the Work-Life Balance Schedule as per Article 21.07 of the UBCP/ACTRA and Unifor Local 3000 Collective Agreement.

SALARY: $111,155.54. This position has a current annual salary of Business Agent Residuals rate, pursuant to Appendix A of the UBCP/ACTRA/Unifor Local 3000 Collective Agreement.
