ABOUT THE EQUALITY FUND

The Equality Fund is transforming the way that resourcesand powerflow into the hands of women, girls and gender expansive people worldwide. Designed by feminists for feminists, it is a model for sustainably resourcing feminist movements everywhere, through global grantmaking, gender-lens investing, policy advocacy, and feminist philanthropy. Launched in 2019, the Equality Fund has activated $100 million to date which flows to more than 1,000 organizations working across 100 countries.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Associate Vice-President (AVP), Finance is a senior operational leader responsible for managing the Equality Funds day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Reporting to the CFO, the AVP will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, and treasury activities, while supporting the CFO in executing the organizations long-term financial strategy and risk management.

The AVP will play a critical role in translating the CFOs strategic vision into actionable plans, ensuring that financial operations align with the Equality Funds mission and values. This role requires a detail-oriented leader with strong technical expertise, a commitment to collaboration, and the ability to manage complex financial processes in a global, fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, along with a CPA designation, and a proven track record of achieving financial effectiveness and efficiency. You understand the complexities of working in a not for profit in the current uncertain, complex global environment and bring expertise in developing organizational-level financial strategies that deliver sustainable financial results for EF. You have a well-defined sense of diplomacy and can effectively adapt to the political sensitivities of a feminist association. You are known for your transparency, tact, foresight and long-term strategic thinking. You are recognized for your high level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability. You bring exceptional communication and management skills that inspire trust, and have the ability to build collaborative working relationships at all levels of the organization. The AVP, Finance is a member of the senior team.

SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Financial Operations and Reporting

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, payroll, and treasury activities.
  • Prepare and deliver accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements.
  • Monitor cash flow and short-term investments, ensuring optimal liquidity and interest earnings.

2. Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the CFO and department heads.
  • Develop and maintain financial forecasts, providing insights into organizational performance and resource allocation.
  • Investigate and resolve budget variances, recommending corrective actions as needed.

3. Risk Management and Compliance

  • Implement and monitor internal controls to ensure compliance with financial policies, regulations, and donor requirements.
  • Support the CFO in conducting risk assessments and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee the preparation for internal and external audits, ensuring timely resolution of findings.

4. Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the finance team and across all financial practices.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members on technical accounting and financial matters.

5. Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure financial processes support organizational priorities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external partners, including auditors, vendors, and financial institutions.
  • Provide financial training and support to non-finance staff as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES

  • CPA designation;
  • At least 6 years of progressive management/leadership experience in a similar role;
  • Experience with investment management and related accounting and reporting;
  • Commitment to the work and values of the Equality Fund, in particular the values of gender equality and shifting traditional power systems;
  • Exhibits an outgoing and approachable demeanor; demonstrates integrity, diplomacy, work ethic;
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting softwares, spreadsheet programs/applications and Google suite;
  • Experience creating and managing budgets for a large, distributed organization;
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills;
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy;
  • Sound strategic and analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills; results oriented;
  • Flexible and adaptive, able to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanour;
  • Solid negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
  • Demonstrated experience building teams and managing change; ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments and key business stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Proven experience with organization growth scaling is beneficial;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and complex environment is essential; ability to juggle multiple priorities, navigate changing realities and work effectively with a range of styles and approaches;
  • Experience working in a non-profit, human rights, or advocacy organization is an asset;
  • Experience working with employees in multiple countries and with Employers of Record is an asset;
  • Professional working proficiency in French and/or Spanish is an asset.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Able and willing to travel (mostly within Canada), 3-6 times per year for up to 2-6 weeks total per year.
  • This position may be responsible for meeting tight deadlines; occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Willing and able to work remotely on mostly computer-based work

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Equality Funds People, Equity, and Culture team will work with the hiring manager to do an initial screening of applicants. Please make sure to detail your experience in your resume/cover letter to ensure the committee has the information they need to assess your qualifications for the role. This process takes about 1 week from the application deadline.
  • When there are many candidates who pass the initial screening, the People, Equity, and Culture team may conduct 15-30 minute phone screening calls.
  • The hiring committee will conduct first round interviews with selected candidates. Candidates will be sent the interview questions 48 hours in advance of their scheduled interview. Candidates are welcome, but not expected or required, to send any questions they have for the hiring committee in advance of the interview. These interviews usually occur 1-2 weeks after the application deadline.
  • The hiring committee may conduct a second round of interviews, which may include an assignment.
  • The People, Equity, and Culture team will conduct reference checks for the candidate to whom they intend to extend an offer. This process usually takes about 1 week.
  • The People, Equity, and Culture team will initiate a background check. This is intended to safeguard Equality Fund employees, grantees, and the organization. We recognize that some communities experience systemic over-policing. As such, only findings related to harassment, exploitation, coercion, sexual exploitation, fraud, abuse, or other findings specifically relevant to the duties of the role will be considered in relation to ones eligibility for employment.
  • The People, Equity, and Culture team will send the selected candidate an Employment Agreement, which the candidate will have time to review and return.
