At GMS, we've been helping Canadians for more than 75 years to get the health and travel insurance they want and need. The same pioneering spirit that started our story is what drives us to do things differently today. Insurance, honestly, is our promise, and it's what we do at GMS. We care about our customers, our community and each other. As a non-profit organization, we're proud to reinvest our profits into the health of the communities we serve and that have supported us since 1949.
We want our employees to feel good about coming to work and being in a workplace that promotes flexibility, growth and a healthy work-life balance. If you'd like to be part of a team that truly takes care of our customers, our communities, and each other, this could be your chance.
Here's the role
The Manager, IT Operations (Cloud, Security and Infrastructure) oversees the organization's end to end technology operations-on premise, cloud platforms, and third-party cybersecurity partnerships. This role ensures we will have secure, reliable, and cost-effective platforms that support digital transformation, advanced analytics, and the responsible adoption of AI. Over the coming years, the focus will shift from maintaining legacy on-premises systems to embracing an Azure first architecture, optimizing cloud costs, and advancing risk-based security governance. This role requires a combination of hands-on operational leadership and strategic expertise in vendor and risk management.
Position Responsibilities
•Act as primary liaison to the Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP); negotiate SLAs, review performance dashboards, maintain the security risk register, and coordinate remediation across IT, architecture, and business units.
•Maintain high availability, performance, backup, and disaster recovery for both on prem and Azure estates; introduce infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and self service patterns as migration progresses.
•Define and execute the Azure migration roadmap; govern landing zones, identity, policy, and FinOps centered cost management.
•Blend ITIL/ITSM processes with DevOps/SRE practices; own incident, problem, and change management, including acting as incident commander for major outages or security events.
•Ensure data platform reliability and evaluate/approve AI toolsets with an emphasis on security and compliance.
•Lead, coach, and develop team; identify and close any skills gaps (cloud, security, automation) through training and certification plans.
•Manage relationships and contracts with cloud, infrastructure, and security vendors; oversee renewals, SLAs, and commercial negotiations.
•Develop and manage the IT Operations budget; produce executive reports on uptime, cloud spend, MSSP SLA adherence, and remediation progress.
•Ensure infrastructure and security controls meet relevant insurance industry regulations and frameworks, coordinate audits, penetration tests, and tabletop exercises.
•Lead the team supporting laptops, mobile devices, and A/V rooms; maintain the asset inventory and refresh schedule; oversee hardware / software onboarding offboarding; track support metrics to drive continuous improvement.
Competencies
•Results Orientation: Delivers measurable improvements in service quality, cost, and risk reduction.
•Leadership: Promotes organization mission, vision, values, and goals; builds strong understanding of context and considers multiple angle's prior to making decisions and providing recommendations.
•Impact and Influence: Easily establishes credibility with multiple diverse audiences; uses sophisticated techniques to persuade or convince others of organization priorities; maintains a strong understanding of the organization, and its key deliverables.
•Flexibility and Agility: Embraces continuous learning; adapts quickly as the balance shifts from legacy to cloud and security governance.
Education & Experience
•Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (Master's is an asset).
•8+ years in IT infrastructure and/or operations, including 3+ years of leadership experience.
•Cloud migration leadership (Azure highly desirable).
•Oversight of managed security providers (MSSP) or comparable third party security governance.
•Working knowledge of ITIL/ITSM and DevOps or SRE practices or demonstrated ability to operate in environments that combine structured service management with modern automation.
•Preferred certifications include AZ 104 or AZ 800/801 (operations), AZ 305 (architecture), SC 100 (security), and ITIL v4 (service‐management); any combination is an asset.
•Insurance or financial services experience an asset.
